Last year on March 30th 2016 Tech in Motion (https://www.meetup.com/TechinMotionSF/events/228357541/) hosted a tech talk focusing on the newest and coolest kid on the DevOps block - Containerization [PART ONE.] We explored how this new containerization was driving productivity and allowing developers to work more effectively on strategic projects. >>So now the Tech in Motion Team Presents Containers and Production - One Year Later!!

INTRO PART TWO!!

>> We are going to have a panelist from each aspect of production that will give you more insight into the pipeline from end to end. Our panelists will be experts in the following technologies and how they are integrated into DevOps: Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, Swarm, and Mesosphere. A year later a lot has happened. Join us in learning from other designers and engineers about their experiences in the past year!

“Currently, DevOps is more like a philosophical movement, not yet a precise collection of practices, descriptive or prescriptive”

Containers and production are now taking application portability to a new level and we’re excited to explore this new wave of DevOps. Not to mention how it’s helping teams work more efficiently making applications move more seamlessly. Finally, we will discuss in depth how containers are modifying the world for software developers and what you and your teams should be doing about it now.

Joe Schneider is a DevOps/SRE Engineer at DroneDeploy. Originally trained as a mechanical engineer, he has discovered a passion for improving the developer experience through automation. He has managed clusters of machines companies ranging from multi-billion dollar giants to tiny startups, and in industries as diverse as Semiconductors, E-Commerce, and SaaS. He has been running containers in production since 2015.

One of only 9 women in the World that can claim the title of FreeBSD src committer, she has voluntarily helped develop the FreeBSD base Operating System for more than 10 years. A little over 2 years ago, sheI became one of less than 50 people in the World that can claim title of both src committer and FreeBSD ports committer. Before FreeBSD, she worked on Gentoo Linux. Before Gentoo, she worked on Debian Linux. She has forked Linux and FreeBSD multiple times into discrete/separate Operating Systems (Spyder Linux, used by DoD contractors; DruidBSD used in the financial sector; and FrauBSD targeting women in STEM).

She is a programmer first and foremost. She wows all her colleagues with my DTrace skills for troubleshooting kernel and programs. Her resume very rarely does her justice.

She is also a VCS guru, having deep knowledge of CVS, SVN, Perforce, and Git.

Tung Nguyen | VP of Engineering at Bleacher Report

Tung Nguyen was the first non-founder employee former VP of Engineering at Bleacher Report. Tung scaled Bleacher Report from an obscure website pulling in 50k uniques a month to a household name and being the 2nd largest sports site in the world. Tung does a little bit of everything. Tung has ran and led the Backend teams, QA teams, and DevOps teams. Ultimately, Tung is a developer at heart. He probably still codes way too much given his daily responsibilities, which is why other engineers catch him sneaking in his coding late at night.

Amanda Gilmore | Site Reliability Engineer, New Relic

Amanda Gilmore is a site reliability engineer at New Relic, and has worked with complex distributed systems for most of her career. She began her technical career as a QA engineer, where she quickly learned that maintaining test environments is pretty fun. From there she upped her SQL skills, which paved the way to a stint maintaining millions of Postgres databases deployed in LXC containers on AWS. All of the services that she currently maintains are Dockerized, and she now finds the care and feeding of large production environments to be even more fun than the test ones. She also enjoys knitting and playing Irish harp music.

Jeff Malnick | Engineering Manager (DC/OS Day Two Operations), Mesosphere, Inc.

Jeff has been working in the IT infrastructure engineering space since 2005. He started out building networked telepresence systems for department of defense war rooms, and moved into private industry in 2013 with Puppet Labs as consultant for enterprise customers. He moved on from Puppet to directing infrastructure automation and development pipelines for Source Clear, a software security company here in San Francisco. At Source Clear, Jeff moved the development pipeline from manual jar file deployment to docker via Mesos orchestration. Mesosphere, the company behind DC/OS, reached out to Jeff not long after he open sourced tooling he built around Marathon and HaProxy. At Mesosphere, Jeff built the installer for DC/OS and contributed to development on, and managed, the teams which develop the metrics, logging, debugging and diagnostics services. Today, Jeff is a senior software engineer at Blue Owl Technologies, an insure-tech startup working to make better drivers. At Blue Owl, Jeff is building the infrastructure that runs everything from the micro services to big data platforms.

Nick Goodman | Principal Engineer, RiskIQ

Nick has a passion for short development cycles, cleanly-written java, containers, and devops/no-ops. He is currently a Principal Engineer and manager of the data services team at RiskIQ.

Nick’s first job was writing installation tooling for linux supercomputers, leveraging kickstart and rpms. From there, he worked in the energy industry, focusing on commercial automation for gas pipelines and energy trading software. Since 2013 Nick has lead teams at SaaS startups and has focused heavily on introducing devops culture and tools.
