Mobile Design Trends in 2013

Mobile design changes quickly, and many trends are new for 2013 on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry. Qubop principals Chia Hwu ( and Evan Kirchhoff ( will walk you though the mobile landscape, from business models to cutting-edge design and technology, and give you a good overview of how to think about design and development on the different smartphone platforms. This talk is for anyone who needs to know more about mobile strategy, design, or development in 2013.

About Chia Hwu:

Chia's background spans product design, marketing, and both hard sciences and the visual arts, and includes seven Silicon Valley startups. Before Qubop, she was Director of Marketing and Developer Outreach at Corona Labs, where she was responsible for leading brand strategy, public relations, and product marketing for their mobile tools. Chia previously worked at the Google-funded 23andMe, where she built the company's user communities, created a new product line and social campaign that increased sales by 10x, and managed some of the earliest efforts in marketing genetics to consumers. At Loyalty Lab, Chia sold loyalty programs to major retailers like Smith & Hawken, RedEnvelope and Nine West.

Chia has worked in biotech as a medicinal chemist, completed all coursework for a PhD in Chemistry, received her MS from UCSD, and earned her bachelor's degree from Williams College. She is a coauthor of Teach Yourself the Twitter API in 24 Hours (Sams) and an expert at the integration of game mechanics and social features into apps.

About Evan Kirchhoff:

Evan has been developing mobile products and platform solutions for over ten years, with a specialization in UI and mobile experience design. Prior to Qubop, Evan was employee #1 at Corona Labs and Lead Architect on their cross-platform Corona SDK for iOS and Android, currently used by hundreds of thousands of mobile developers worldwide, for which he designed and implemented many key features including the popular 2D physics API. Evan previously worked for Adobe as a Senior Developer on the Verizon Wireless FlashCast content platform. In addition, Evan was the co-founder of Comrade Software, a web and mobile production company that created games for the carrier decks of both Verizon Wireless and Softbank Japan, with clients that included Sun Microsystems, BNP Paribas, Cardinal Health, Benchmark Capital, Seattle Sound Transit, the Dallas Federal Reserve, Blue Shield of California, and . Evan also designed the user interface for TwirlTV, which won a DEMOgod award at DEMO Fall 2009.

Parking Details:

You can find free metered street parking after 6pm around the office. There is also garage connected to our building which is a $7 flat rate if you park after 5pm.

PARKING UPDATE: The 49er Draft Bash is tonight, so there will be some street closures. Cityview Plaza Parking Garage will not be affected and will still be the best place to park for a $7 flat rate fee.
