Looking at good engineering and tech schools for son any recommendations?

He is 15; sophomore; basketball has expressed interest in biomedical and computer engineering (app developer). He is really not sure because he has limited exposure. HS he has taken electrical and aerospace engineering. He attended a STEM school freshman yr. Now he is at an IB school where he will graduate, they don't have STEM. Looking opportunities to expose him to different careers and college options. Right now he has a strong interest in GA Tech, Duke, and Michigan Univ. He is an A/B student. Gifted in Science has to apply himself w/ math. How does one find out about these initiatives such as the one at Clemson. What is the best way to get him exposed to different career options? I am also concerned that most of your top schools/ schools period do not have many african americans. i am also concerned that at the HS level, expectations for African Americans in mathematics are very low. Thank you for your time.

Hi Erikka. You present some very interesting questions, to some of which there aren't many good answers. Its very well documented that African Americans and people of color have low participation in the STEM areas. My hope is that your son will continue down the path of engineering and help to increase our numbers. My advice to you is to just keep diligently seeking the college websites or even call them. I also wonder if his school might have some knowledge of programs. My daughter has attended summer technology camps at Georgia Gwinnett College, Mercer University and the Ben Carson Science Academy. There's a good chance that each of those camps will run again next year. One of my goals for this organization is to create a website that provides this type of information; so I'm glad to see you ask these questions. At any rate, I hope this helps.
