"ARMA - the Association for Renaissance Martial Arts, is an educational non-profit organization dedicated to the study and practice of historical fencing and the exploration and promotion of our Western martial heritage. The ARMA focuses on the interpretation and legitimate reconstruction of Medieval and Renaissance combat systems as a modern discipline. The ARMA endeavors to approximate historical fighting skills through a curriculum of reconstructed techniques, principles, and methods for using a variety of swords, spears, shields, staff weapons, daggers, and unarmed grappling and wrestling skills as taught in numerous surviving books and manuscripts. The ARMA’s efforts are directed toward resurrecting and recreating a legitimate craft of European fighting skills in a manner that is historically valid and martially sound. We rely for our source material upon the dozens of rare surviving manuals of Medieval and Renaissance Masters of Defense."-Excerpts from the ARMA website in our 'about' section.

ARMA is part of the World Martial Arts Union and has been featured in several TV programs: Discovery Channel's Medieval Fight Book and PBS NOVA Secrets of the Viking Sword.

I would like to start a Southeast Michigan study group with like minded people. I live in Trenton and work in the Ypsi-Arbor area. I will be happy to drive out where necessary in the area to train and even to talk about the club if you are curious. Feel free to look me up on facebook or send me an email at

"I've been fencing in the SCA using Meyer's rapier for almost 4 years. i'm looking to break away from the SCA and focus more on the actual art of combat than the medieval portion. I live in the Toledo area, but no one down here does ARMA or HEMA."
