Barcelona Road Cycling Group is a diverse group of (mostly) expatriate cyclists who share a passion for road cycling. Since the group's inception in 2008, BRCG's peloton has grown steadily. While this has been great for riding, we have seen a dramatic difference in abilities, ranging from beginners who have recently purchased a road bike and are new to cycling to dedicated riders training for cyclosportives. So to avoid any disappointments out on the road, organizers will start rating rides as advanced, intermediate, and beginner, which will indicate the intensity—hard, moderate, and easy—of the ride. Rides may vary greatly in actual average speed depending on distance and climbs, so always review the ride description beforehand.

Ride Difficulty Rating

Advanced. Difficult climbs, distances over 100km, fast pace. Average speed will be high (25-30kph average; > 30kph on flat roads) with breaks kept to a minimum. Suited to experienced riders with a high level of training and fitness.

Intermediate. Expect some climbs, distances between 50 and 100km and a reasonable pace. Speed will be adapted to the group (20-25kph average; flats > 25kph). Suited to riders with some experience and average fitness.

Beginner. Rides are generally short, less than 75km, scenic and may include a lunch break. Suited to beginners, riders with low fitness levels, or those looking for a casual ride and perhaps a tasty lunch.

When considering a ride, always read the description carefully and contact the ride organizer with any questions or concerns. Organizers will post a general description including route, distance, ride difficulty rating, climbs, planned stops, as well as meeting and transportation information.

Organizers reserve the right to request a rider not start or drop out if he or she feels the rider does not have the level of fitness and/or equipment required.

Speed will be monitored en route to assure all members can complete the ride together. Faster, advanced rides with more than 10 cyclists may be split into two groups. On climbs, we regroup at the top of each climb. If the gap is excessive between the fastest and slowest climbers a dropout or turnaround point may be discussed.

In the event someone has to drop out, please try to notify the organizer or another rider to avoid delays and confusion whether to double back or continue to wait etc.

Please note: although BRCG is a Mediterranean group, rides start promptly and usually roll within 5 minutes of departure time. Riders who are new or anyone unfamiliar with the city, should aim to arrive early or risk being left behind.
