Guided Walk, History, Landscape and Culture: St Thomas and Temple

Meet near Newgate, by the Steel Sculpture, in Castle Park, facing the top of Union Street.

We explore parts of Castle Park and learn about the construction and destruction, walk along the floating harbour to shiny new development on industrial sites and the works of Mr Brunel. We return via the medieval suburbs of Temple and St Thomas, the pub that helped with abolition of Slavery crossing Bristol Bridge Back to the park. Afterwards we can return directly to the Seven Stars if you wish for a drink, it's on the way to the station if you come by train! http://www.7stars.co.uk/ Unlike the morning walk this one is flat apart from the park. Let me know if you want to join others for lunch before the walk.

Interesting walk around parts of Bristol I haven't seen before. We started off as 12, but the chilly wind whittled us down to a few hardy souls, expecially after a stop in a warm pub. Thanks to Elizabeth for an informative historical overview of this area. I didn't take many photos because my hands got too cold out of my pockets. Some people were sensible enough to wear gloves!

Hi all lookiing forward to meeting you or seeing you again. Weather is supposed to be overcast but a fair windchill so please wrap up. Nearest parking is the galleries entrance on Newgate and that is where the nearest toilets are on Sundays.
If you want to swap notes or mobile nos between yourselves fine, but I am now off radar till we meet in person!

Hi Elizabeth, thank you so much for organising the walks today. I am so sorry we had to leave early, just too cold for us. I hope you'll maybe repeat the walks again in warmer tiimes. Linda

No worries Linda, thanks for coming and sorry you had to wait in the cold. I hope you are warm now. No one including me completed the entire walk. Next time I will arrange to meet inside!

1-1.15pm, if everyone is happy about it I can lead people directly to the pub from our return via Broadweir rather than going back into Castle Park from the St James and Kingdown Walk. The morning walk will be the longest. there will only be a few chat stops for that one though. Bring very warm clothes and waterproofs. Look forward to seeing you again.

Sorry, change of plan, regarding lunch. Rummer is going to be a bit tricky. We can try Volunteer Tavern Sunday Roast, if you want to book a roast yourselves ring[masked] I've not tried the roasts but I have eaten and drunk good real ales here. I will lead the way but if you want to know it's on New Street in St Judes, not far at all from Castle Park. https://www.facebook.com/VolunteerTavern is more up to date than their website.
