Parking Penselwood church, some verge parking at Bleak Farm
An expedition through, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire, to Alfred's and Alfred's Tower.
Go through churchyard to road beyond. Turn L through Bleak Farm village, then L into sunken track ending at top of tarred lane. Turn L through white gate ('Pen Mill Hill'). Head down to kissing gate in dip; follow track past pond to road.
Cross into path ('Coombe Street'). Pass below orchard Cottages, then turn L over 2 stiles. Cross stream in dip to stile below thatched cottage. Woodland path bends R to footbridge over River Stour.
From here to ('Stour Valley Way') Go on to tarred lane; turn L. Keep ahead into hedged way to stile. Go up and round L to another stile. Lane beyond leads to T-junction; go across and turn L on to bridleway. Go through gate to follow L edge of field into hedged track, emerge opposite Bonham House.
Turn L; at 2nd signpost bear R to road below. Follow to R, to rustic rock arch. Take track on L ('Alfred's Tower')
Track bends R and heads into wooded valley with Alfred's Tower visible ahead, reaching open ground at hilltop, with road ahead. Turn L, in grassy avenue, to Alfred's Tower.
Join road ahead for 220yds, down to sunken path on L ('Penselwood'). Follow, ignoring paths on both sides, on to track down to major junction. Bear R to lane, then R again, on road ('Penselwood'), which leads over hilltop with hill fort. Descend until ground appears on L.
Cross stile, head downhill with Castle Wood L, and young trees R, Move into wood to join track along its edge. At corner of wood, waymarked gate on R leads into fields.
Follow L edge of 1st field to 2 gate on L; keep ahead to gate and 2nd gate beyond. Track leads out to road. Turn R to sharp R-H bend, where gate starts field path to Penselwood church.
