Make Sweet Music - Jam

Calling all Musicians.
Got an acoustic instrument?
Sing a bit?

Bring your instrument and/or voice along to The Nova Scotia Hotel - buy a drink and come on upstairs. We have exclusive use of the Function Room to have some fun, play in front of others, be creative and learn a bit.

It's totally free for our exclusive use (the pub will obviously expect us to have a few drinks to make it worth their while).

This will be the 5th meeting and we've built up a small repertoire so far.

If you want to play something and wish others to join in then bring a few copies of the lyrics/chords.  Maybe even post a few ideas on this page, so others can prepare if they wish.

The main emphasis on these evenings is to have some fun.  If you are looking for musical collaborators and new band members, then it's a good place to meet potential.

The Future!!??

I'm thinking of scheduling two Meet-ups at the same venue, at the same time; one for musicians and the other for drinkers.  Meet-up musicians (solos, duets, groups, all of us?) perform their own "open mic" songs in front of an exclusive (and hopefully sympathetic) Meet-up audience.  They drink, we play (and drink!), and everybody's happy :-)  This could be a good way into performing publicly for those who want to, but haven't yet had the courage or opportunity.

Hi Richard the Bass! If you would like to come to the next jam on 28th February then Melissa said that she would give you a lift so that you can bring your bass and amp. Be great to see you there. Russ

      Russ,

Richard won't "see" this message because he is not on the RSVP list for the event. You will have to email him directly.

      1. Search for his profile name/picture in "Members" (to the left of your screen), or find him in a past event he went to.
      2. Click on his name or photo.
      3. Then, top left of screen you'll see the email option.

Well folks. The Nova Scotia is fully booked Mon, Tues, Weds, Thurs until the week of 14th April. Crazy!!

They do have Friday 28th Feb free. At the moment that's ok for me; but I know Fridays are not convenient for everyone.

So we have that option; or, I could call Jame's Wine Vaults in Bath for a mid-week evening, unless anyone else has any good ideas.

Also, the Purplettes can always meet together and do their thang at an agreed location.

Over the 5 jams so far we have built up a repetoire of 13 songs, some we know more than others and some new ones we tried last nite. I am aware that we may need some more uptempo songs and i would like to add a rocky version of Blowin In The Wind to the list and also 3 more of my upbeat original songs if i may? I don't have any ego about my songs and if others would like to sing lead vocal on some of them i would be very happy about that. Here is the list so far. I am it will be added to over time!

Hi Steve, Cristina and Melissa. I agree with you all that it should remain as a jam and if a band does come out of it at a later date that would be great as well. The main thing is we have lots of fun and laughter and create some beautiful and uptempo music between us! And the more we play and sing together the better it will become. And the idea of playing to a Meet Up audience is great and will give us a real focus. Also having new people coming in all the time is exciting and keeps the postivity going! Also that was very kind of you Melissa to pick up Bassman Richard from Bath for the next jam on 27th. And yes Steve thankyou for booking it and i will be there! Yes the Purple Tones sounds great!

Hi Steve I can't do the 27th as I won't be back from Cardiff. I'll have some jammin' to catch up on I think! Have fun...

Hi it was great to meet everyone. The 27th is okay for me. I agree with Cristina, keep it just as a jam and have a band as well. How about the name Purple Tones? Perhaps we can talk about it when we next meet.

Hi! 27th is ok for me, and I think it's better to take it just as a jam. For the people who want to build up a band, we can talk about it later, I think.

Hi everyone. Is Thursday 27th at the Nova Scotia any good for you? If so, then I'll go ahead and book it.

Just to re-emphasise. I'd like to keep this as a "hub" musical get-together. From which people may wish to form partnerships, such as "The Purple People". Such partnerships can then arrange their own meet ups and/or practice time to build a repertoire. I don't want to exclude newbies from coming along if they think it's a "group/band" practice. Does that make sense?

So - a question. Do you want the meet up on 27th to be a practice for The Purple People, or do you want it to be a meet up musical jam/get-together?

Here is a name suggestion for our musical collective...The Purple People! What do you all think?

Hi Everyone! Thankyou all for a very enjoyable evening. Lots of laughs and great singing, harmonising and playing! It is really starting to come together now and gel! Lots of positivity and the more we focus on the songs the better they will get! It seems that we have a strong selection of at least 12 songs that we can hone and perfect! Also i loved the Purple thing that was going on and i will definately be wearing a purple kaftan next time! Here is a suggestion for our musical collectivr

The weather is looking pretty calm for tonight.

Looks like the "Magnificent Seven", I'm sure we can have some fun. See you all later.

The blues idea sounds great, Steve! Simple blues songs and ones made up would be good for the singers to harmonise with! Also the plan for the future sounds perfect too...performers and audience all from Meet Up! Perfect!

After watching Kent DuChaine, in Bath on Friday, playing some Robert Johnson, I'm thinking perhaps we should get some simple 12-bar blues going; if anyone has a favourite lyric to bring along "I woke up this morning etc ", or we could ad-lib our own "Got them spike island blues; man, damn mud won't leave me alone…..."

Be good to see you and the regular gang and some new faces on Thursday! Let us hope the Nova Scotia is above water!
