Poems on A Beermat - Pub Walk (12 miles approx)

Ten pubs, ten beermats with poems on to collect, about 12 miles and a lantern procession to welcome us all back! What better way to spend your Saturday!

Timed to coincide with the Bradford on Avon Arts Festival and taking in three events - The Poems on a Beermat Trail, The Lantern Parade and The End of Summer Party. This event should be a challenge (in so many ways).

The plan is to meet in Bradford on Avon (BoA) at the station at 10:45am, get the bus to Holt, walk to Limpley Stoke and then back to BoA via Winsley stopping at each of the pubs on the way for a swift half and to collect a beermat (subject to availability and opening hours!). The Lantern Parade starts at 7.45pm so the pace will be moderate and about 1/2 of the distance will be on canal towpath. There should be time for about 20mins at each pub on the way round (we will need to visit some of the pubs in BoA after the parade).

So, the poems..... From the entries in a national poetry competition ten poems on the theme of Light will be printed on beermats. Ten pubs in and around Bradford on Avon will each host one poem. The pubs sponsoring a poem on a beermat are:

Three Horseshoes -55 Frome Rd, BA15 1LA

The Old Ham Tree -Ham Green, Holt, BA14 6PY

The Boathouse -Widbrook, BoA, BA15 1UD

The Barge -17 Frome Road, BA15 2EA

The Hop Pole -Woods Hill, Limpley Stoke, BA2 7FS

Seven Stars -Winsley, BoA, BA15 2LQ

The Rising Sun -231 Winsley Road, BA15 1QS

The Castle -Mt Pleasant, BoA, BA15 1SJ

The Dandylion -35 Market Street, BA15 1LL

Swan Hotel –1 Church Street, BA15 1LN

And,  the lanterns... a parade of lanterns from shoals of small fish to giant eels, will process from the Tithe Barn at 7.45pm along the river into the centre of town ending at Westbury Gardens around 8.30pm to join in the...

End of Summer Party...the town will be lit up with moving, colour changing lights. Westbury Gardens, the Town Bridge and the Mckever Bridge will all dazzle. Food, drink and entertainment from 6 till 9:30pm.

More info on the festival and details of the beer mat competition at: http://boaartsfestival.com/2014-programme/

Bring a packed lunch/tea (there won't be time to eat at a pub - sorry), plenty of water and snacks, money for the bus (£1.30) and the um, err, refreshments along the way :-) Oh, and don't forget to come prepared for all weathers - sunglasses, sun cream, waterproofs and a torch (we shouldn't need it, honest, but "Be prepared") !

Parking at the station (Zone B) costs £5.20 for 8 hours (it's free after 6pm). The machines accept cash only but you can pay by mobile for an extra 20p.

I've done the pre-walk and the proposed route, which visits the pubs in the order given above, is shown here: https://goo.gl/maps/stUJk

A touche late perhaps, but one of the group won the slogan competition...

Well done Dave. I stared at the pile of beermats sitting on my desk for a few weeks then realised I'd missed the deadline and put them in the bin.

Thanks for coming. Had a fab day and couldn't have hoped for a nicer group of people to share it with. Good luck with your slogans - be brilliant if one of us won it. But whatever happens - we'll always have the 'poo' bag!

Thanks Elsa for a superbly organised day. Great walk, lovely pubs & scenery & a terrific crowd of people. For those in the kitty, I will put the leftover change in a charity box. Now to give my aching legs a well earned day off.

Hi All, a minute or two either way won't be a problem. :-) However I'm sure you'll appreciate that as we have a bus to catch just after 1, if trains are delayed or you get stuck behind a tractor or get lost or can't find a parking space, we cannot wait or the whole day will fall apart for everyone. Looking forward to seeing you all. Elsa

Regrettably changing my RSVP. My already dodgy knee is playing up and telling me it doesn't want to walk 12 miles tomorrow. Have a great day and evening everyone, really sorry to miss it.

Anybody going from Chippenham who can offer me a lift or wishes to take the train together?

    September 11, 2014

    • claire

Ooh thanks very much Mark that's very nice of you. As dave mentioned, he offered. I may take you up on the return journey if that's Ok? See you tomorrow :)

    • Mark H

Thanks Dave a lift there would be great. Where is the best place for me to meet you/pick up?

      September 12, 2014

I note from the web site there's a competition where you have to collect the last word from each beermat, and then submit a small slogan.

Great - we have 12 miles, and nearly as many hours, to think up an ending to - "Words can be more powerful than pictures because…"

Had a quick preview of some beermat poems tonight - who says I don't do my homework! :-)
Please note I have changed the start time to 10.45am. I've sent you all an email explaining why - it also includes my phone number. See you Saturday.
