After their fight our group had a chance to explore the ship and found that the entire crew was dead. Some seemed to have been poisoned, and it looked as if those responsible for the poison had been attacked by the remaining few crew members that were not. Boldum checked for any structural damage and to the best of his knowledge was unable to find anything, which was a good thing. Uriel and Altheae decided to see what other cargo was onboard, and started opening crates in the hold. There were some very strange items including some very potent liquor and a few jars of 'black sand'. They also found a few wild animals that looked to be being shipped to Daiss to fight in the games. A few times they were a little too careless opening the crates and the spells keeping the animals asleep was broken. Uriel and Althaea both almost lost a hand a few times to a few animals. They also discovered in one of the crates a bound Half-Orc dressed in the simple robes of a monk. They decided to free him and found out that he had been abducted by someone while he was one his pilgrimage. Taking care with the largest crate in the hold, when they opened that one they discovered a very large and still asleep troll. Erring on the side of caution they just closed that one back up.
With a little more exploration of the ship the group found the captain's stash of treasure and the way to control the oars. So they set out to make it to Daiss. They managed to make it out of the river with no incident, and before crossing the King's Lake decided to rest since they had sailed for an entire day without rest. One they decided on a course to Daiss they set off again. Things were going well until the final day. With Althaea on lookout duty, she easily spotted Daiss coming into view. What she missed was the large sandbar just under the water that they beached the ship on. With water starting to fill the cargo hold, they had no choice but to abandon ship. This posed its own problems as nine armed and armored people in one life boat tends to make for a really heavy boat. With a long journey by row boat to Daiss, changing rowers was not as easy as you would think. Althaea was knocked over board twice, and at one point the boat almost capsized instead everyone found themselves in the lake. After some scrambling they all made it safely into the boat, and finally made it to land. Where they would all crumple to the sand in exhaustion, but Boldum would have enough left to cast an Alarm ritual so noone had to stand guard.
Once they woke up in the morning and made their way into Daiss, they headed straight to the Starbow trading house. They got the run around for a minute as the clerk said their boat was not supposed to be in Daiss for another week. When Althaea suggested he check again he left only to return in a huff. Informing them they had sent two ships to recover what they could and were terribly sorry for the inconvenience. Althaea insisted on transport to their 'appointed place' and were obliged. They were taken in two covered wagons into the Old City where they were taken to the rear of a very large estate. When they stepped out of the wagons they were greeted by a servent who led them to a fountain which disguised a secret stairway leading underground. At the end of the stairs was a heavy door guarded by two heavily armed men. After gaining entrance they were greeted to the sound, smells, and emotion of a few hundred people crowed in watching people fight for their lives. They were shown to a table by a very attractive young serving girl, who also was a well of information about the games.
The Master of the Games for this night was a low ranking member of the Nicholas House, and really enjoyed the power his family name gave him. He conducted the games with skill and drew much praise from the spectators. He even allowed some of the members of the group to take part in the games. Uriel, Stasi, Boldum, and the Monk all faced the perils of the game and made it out alive while winning Althaea alot of gold. The nights games are coming to a close, there is only a few matches left. The main event will see two ogres in action, but who will face them? Can our group make it through the night without someone recognizing them? Will Althaea recruit their waitress into their group? Will Krislynn finally get to kill something after being locked in a box for two days?
