What we're about

If you think our country is falling apart because liberals and conservatives don't know how to talk to each other anymore, you’re right, and this meetup is for you. Here, we attempt to foster conversation across the liberal/conservative DMZ, focusing as much on casual experiences as on deeper conversations about the nature of politics and our political system.

Group leadership includes members from across the political spectrum, and all ideologies are welcome -- leftist to libertarian, tea party to teamster.

NOTE: Some people have asked about chipping in for costs. While we absolutely do not require that, we do appreciate your eagerness to help us provide this meetup and will accept contributions of any size. Please go here for our PayPal pool: https://paypal.me/pools/c/8jUr7Ep4Ac

----------------------------------------------------------

Come out on the third Friday of every month for a casual discussion on current events with people from across the political spectrum. Liberal, conservative, independent, libertarian, anarchist, and all other perspectives welcome and encouraged to join.

As always, the goal of our meetups is not to convince people of one viewpoint or another -- it's to get us to learn to understand each other better and to add detail and nuance to our views and opinions about "the other side". That means sharing beers and pizza, wine and hummus, water and chips together; it means speaking in a space where you can't assume everyone agrees with what you're saying; it means finding mutual respect, and also being comfortable with a little discord.

Through these meetups, you'll find new sources of information (both good and bad), you'll learn where people get all their "crazy ideas", you'll learn to refine your own arguments and to flesh out (or sometimes throw out) the assumptions that underpin them. Most of all, we hope you'll come away with the sense that "the other side" is made up of people just like you, and you'll learn that most people are not simply "racists" or "snowflakes".

Each meetup will be a period of mingling followed by a circle discussion about something that's going on in the world today. Expect light snacks and beer/soft drinks, and feel free to bring some of your own to share.

THE LOCATION OF THESE MONTHLY MEETUPS WILL CHANGE, so check the description to make sure.

By default, the meetup will be in the Ambassador Public House, a cool bar in Greektown not far from the Blue line UIC Halsted stop. There is a room where a TV is available to play videos from our laptop on, we can order food, and it's a bit separate from the noisy bar so we will be able to have discussions. If you have any video links or videos you’ve downloaded that you want to share, feel free to bring them!

Hope to see you all there!
