Re: [webdesign-429] Dynamically sharing page content through social media buttons

Hi Ryan,

So long as you have the correct metadata on each of your pages, you'll be able to set up your own (basic) share links. This is a pretty good overview of the process:

In your site's code, you'll give each social site a little information about the page you want to share (such as the page title) and the social site will look up the other information you've defined in the page's metadata (such as the preview image).

Hi all,

I'm looking to add social media sharing buttons to every page within a large website and having them dynamically share page content.

Site I am working on is built with Squiz CMS and don't have luxury of the Wordpress plugin approach. Many Wordpress social media sharing plugins appear to have the ability of plug n' play approach and they seem to be able to automatically 'scrape' the page content and share it. I want to be able to achieve this with a custom HTML approach (having social media buttons code intelligent enough to grab content from each particular page to share). After looking at a popular service called AddThis, it appears as though the sharing data would have to be hand coded into the div data attributes of the parent container - that's far from dynamic in my opinion. Other methods appear to scrape the page metadata content, which sounds promising.

Not really keen on addThis service as it doesn’t seem to provide the dynamic solution I am seeking (however it’s great for gathering stats and data) and the only sensible approach so far I have found is to make my own social media buttons (using RRSSB library)  and then create JS variables to take data from specific metadata fields and print out and append those variables into the social media links. Hope this makes sense.

What I cannot afford to do is retrospecitvely hand code social media buttons for each of the 1000+ pages within the website. I am aware of setting up Open Graph for Facebook but that’s only one of the many social media platforms that can be shared from. Plus I would prefer using the ‘sharer.php’ option because it won’t be easy for me to access the organisation’s official Facebook page to set up an app, open graph, etc.

I'm very keen to hear about any suggestions or approaches to this problem. I'm sure some of you might have encountered this before.
