Irregular Meeting of the AMG: Laser Cutting / Digital Fabrication

  • Sylvan Learning Center

2356 S Church St, Burlington, No (map)

    36.081272 -79.474854

  • Please arrive promptly at 7:00pm (especially those eating dinner)
  • Its time for the next meeting of the Alamance Makers Guild!

Please note: Since the second Thursday in February (our normal meeting day) falls on Valentines Day, this meeting has been moved to the following week on the 21st (the 3rd Thursday of the month)

I'm pleased to announce that we will have a special speaker for this meeting.  NC Artist and Laser Cutting expert Mark Plaga will be joining us to talk about Laser Cutting and Engraving (Subtractive Digital Fabrication Technology).  He'll be demonstrating software, techniques, design, and will be showing off some of his creations.  Although his 4-foot laser cutters are too big to bring to this meeting, we will get to watch him cut something out designed during our meeting via a video link back to his studio in Raleigh!

As an added bonus, Mark has offered to open up his studio to members of the AMG for a laser cutting field day at some point in the future after this meeting.

You can learn a little more about Mark and his artwork at the following links:

(in the past we've covered CNC Routing/Milling, 3D printing, and Vinyl Cutting, so this adds another piece to the digital fabrication puzzle).

As always we will have MiMi's Pizza ($5 per person if you are interested in eating).  Please RSVP for this event and let us know if you plan to eat.  At our last meeting we had many extra folks (a good thing) and had to order extra Pizza.  I'd like to get the order sized right from the start this time so please indicate in your RSVP whether or not you wish to eat (and how many folks you'll be bringing with you).

In addition to Pizza and Lasers we'll also have our normal Show-N-Tell so that you can bring in your own projects and creations to show off to the rest of the group (as always feel free to bring in projects in-progress or if not feasible to bring the item, feel free to bring photos or video to share).

Finally, we'll also have an update on Burlington Mini Maker Faire plans for 2013 and a definite call for makers.  We hope members of the Alamance Makers Guild will exhibit their projects and/or will help us out to man the AMG Booth at this event.  We also need other volunteers for various tasks relating to the event (especially on the day of the event).

As always our events are family friendly.  We ask that younger children be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Feel free to bring family, friends, and neighbors.  Help us grow!  Spread the word about the Alamance Makers Guild! (photos of past events are at our fan page on facebook at: and also on our page).

Looking forward to seeing as many of you there as possible, especially new folks who have signed up on our meetup or fan pages!
