This series could well be called "Read like a Writer/Write like a Reader".
Instead of submissions, we'll read in advance selected short stories or selections from novels by contemporary novelists like Denis Johnson, Junot Diaz, J. Jezewska Stevens, Allan Gurganus, Tony Earley, Scholastique Mukasonga, Elena Ferrante, Anne Beattie, Jonas Hassen Khemiri. Focusing on a particular theme, like writing bad characters, and good sex, driving the narrative, structure, beginnings, first drafts, revisions - we'll analyze these stories and write from prompts meant to stimulate the individual work we're involved in right now.
All writers interested in fiction are welcome. And, although the question of "what exactly is fiction" will always come up, we're not discussing personal narratives or memoir here, unless fictionalized.
This is a continuation of a series begun in January and rescheduled twice monthly from April 6th through June 31.
