Total Lunar eclipse viewing Early! this Saturday morning, December 10, 2011.

Hi All,

A very exciting Saturday morning awaits for those willing to get up early!

There are two scheduled Meetups for this eclipse event for the Calgary Astronomy Meetup Group ( http://www.meetup.com/The-Calgary-Astronomy-Meetup-Group/ ).

Both locations are out of town - one is at the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory SW of Calgary (http://www.ucalgary.ca/rao/ ),

and the other is at the Vulcan Trek Station SE of Calgary (http://calgary.rasc.ca/vulcan2011.htm ).

There is a third event, not scheduled as a Meetup, at All-Star Telescope just south of Didsbury on Hwy 2a (http://www.all-startelescope.com/index.php/Observer-Nights.html ).

In all cases, dress warmly, bring binoculars.  Be sure to watch the websites for cancellation notices in case of inclement weather.  Stay safe - winter roads can be treacherous.

If road travel is in doubt, stay close to home and use your binoculars and watch the setting Moon; you'll need a good west-northwestern horizon.  The eclipse is still in progress as the Moon sets. Alan Dyer has created a set of excellent explanatory graphics and videos available here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/iyacalgary/

For more information on lunar eclipses, see also the pdf document on the Calgary Astronomy Meetup site http://www.meetup.com/The-Calgary-Astronomy-Meetup-Group/files/ ).

Cheers,

Roland Dechesne
