Bitcoin Meetup at Flourish 2014

  • Apr 5, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Tentative Schedule Posted - See http://flourishconf.com/2014/schedule.php

Flourish 2014 is a FREE tech conference hosted at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It is pretty professional, but do not let that scare you. It just means you can network and learn something. As you know Bitcoins is probably one of the biggest innovations in the tech industry, so I think it will be a good experience for bitcoiners to come to Flourish to see Techies. I hope someone from here can even give a talk about Bitcoin... There is also a Game+App Jam during most of the conference and I will love to see all of your beautiful faces in it.

The Bitcoin Sections

Guys, there is going to be roughly three bitcoin talks and a panel(led by about 5-6 people) among all of the other great things happening at the conference. Invite a friend.

Some very thought-provoking presentations! I'm pleased to see so many students and professionals come together to discuss open source software. And what an Awesome Bitcoin & Digital Currency showing! To Nathan and the rest of the Flourish team: Well Done!

Is it possible to invest in the Bitcoin universe starting in small increments of capitol. I am not rich or wealthy, living off social security and savings. I cannot afford to lose large sums of money.

    • Michael

Correct. Every single exchange lets you purchase fractions.

@Kevin, I think "mass media" has done Bitcoin a major disservice by showing a picture of those little gold-ish "B" coins with every article. To say you own some value in Bitcoin means a notation exists on the Blockchain (i.e., Bitcoin's transaction ledger) that corresponds to a key you control. For example, I could have the private key that controls the value in an address with 0.01 Bitcoin

Hey Michael. Thanks for the reply! Sounds good. It's nice that there's at least a panel and discussion on BitCoin and digital currencies. I hope someone can talk a little bit about how BitCoin is now considered "property" by the IRS. Very interesting ruling...

Ask in the panel discussion. That's what it is for. :-)

Sounds like a plan. Thanks Micheal.

I helped Nathan coordinate the bitcoin stuff by connecting him with my professional network. We have no booth and no presence other than some speaking slots.

    March 28, 2014

  • Solomon A.

@Nathan... You don't say? We thought since the BitCoin panel was filled it corresponded with "digital currency booths" Let me know how to sign up and we may be able to put something together in time for Saturday.

@Jake Its very interesting times aren't it :) We see Sollars and Sense as the "American" answer to the problem of a universal currency. We seek for the protocol to honor the timeless principals of Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness for every single individual within the network no matter where they are in the world. Those are the inputs. The output is an easy to use and understand currency, in a decentralized peer to peer network with a DIFFERENT encryption scheme that allows for every man woman and child (yes child) to own a digitized central bank (wallet). With what we are trying to do neither Chase nor CoinBase is needed for securing your own $ense.

Time to pull an Oprah: You get a central bank! You get a central bank! Everyone gets a central bank! ;) #Makes$ense

Kim Dotcom's "Internet Party" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Party_%28New_Zealand%29 I wonder if they'll develop a platform plank for digital (and otherwise) currency freedom?

    March 28, 2014

  • Solomon A.

Not necessarily. It is my understanding that booths are all filled up. With Sollars and Sense we are just looking to engage and network this time around. I'll also invite some folks from my CS class that starts this Tuesday.

@Nathan No Worries I've been on it ;) Alt-Projects will be there representing. I'm wondering if some Ethereum or DogeCoin people will show up. It'd be nice to have some of them too.

    1 · March 27, 2014

  • Solomon A.

Awesome! Its going to be great to engage with the BitCoin and Alt-Coin community again. Hope to meet some developers and crypto-preneurs interested in alternative currency projects in addition to BitCoin. We'll be representing the alt-currency project Sollars and $ense Smart Money See you all there ;)

Good to know that we have a Bitcoin group in Chicago. Looking to connect with developers and enthusiasts on building platform for Bitcoin. All ideas are welcomed as I am in the initial phase of trying to harness the power behind Bitcoin Protocol. Will be attending conference on April 5th. Hope to see everyone.

I am willing to speak at the conference about bitcoins. I don't want anyone to think I am the most knowledgable about the topic but I am well versed in the area and can make a presentation to help people understand the concept and what it could mean to the world going forward. I'm only a student and I have only begun to code but I understand the finance industry very well and how bitcoin applies to the economy.

    1 · March 18, 2014

Thanks Ethan. We will connect with you.
