Annual (cough*cough*) Old Rag Mountain Hike
Welcome to 3200 foot (hiking upward says it's 2400), 9-mile hike, with human-traffic jam up the peak and back that everyone is so fond of in this area. hee-hee. Something we should do for fun at least once a year. Don't under-estimate just because it is only 9-mile-ish hike and is very popular. The trail is eroded and has a little bit of rock scrambling up near the peak and you just feel good to get on hands-and-knees at couple of places. Pace: moderately slow, due to the crowd. You still have to be fit because 3000-foot ascend is 3000 ft. It doesn't get easy because you've heard so-and-so did it. We will take "force" breaks. We won't have a sweeper; you have to stay up with the group. We will sit and have our lunches up top with the whole town there and enjoy the view (don't cry if you can't find a place to sit)!! Please don't carry your chair up. It's too heavy. There will be a lot of sun up top. Not for those who don't like heat+sun. Map: you can likely grab one at the fee station or google for one online like at the hiking upward site. Ask a ranger. what to bring: the basics: food, snacks, lunch, water, money for parking/carpool. Dress appropriately for the weather. Shoes are highly recommended (and required for some people); hey whatever you want. *They (NPS) charge something about $30 per car + something per person something like that, unless you have an annual pass. NPS site said parking is free, but need permit to hike. NPS is probably right. We will park at the 200-car big lot. (200x4 or more, is how many people are on the trail!) bug spray too! yes some you y'all hate bugs. Oh, sunblock too. Bathroom: There are potty johns at the trail big parking lot (used by 1000 of people and I don't know how frequently they are emptied; it is not that bad). Please do use them. No bathroom while on the trail and definitely not up at the ridge...you will probably have to hold it in or know how to do it in the wild :) But Please, Please do drink water, trust me! No one will faint. water: bring your water, you should know how much you'll need. I think 2-3L should be fine. There is a creek/two near the bottom, but I don't think anyone is planning to filter water. If you do know how/love to filter, I don't need to say all the above! signal: poor/no cell reception in the area. So be prepare for all maps/direction beforehand. RSVP. and update it if you can't make it well in advance!! Finally: weight!! go light. You don't need many things. leave them at the car! The heavier your pack and the more you carry, the harder the hike is for you and everyone else. use comment section for carpooling. we normally meet at: Centreville Park & Ride Lot approx: ~14700 Lee Highway, · Centreville, VA @7:30 am; take about 1.5 hrs to drive to the trail. for more info on preparation: https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/old-rag-hike-prep.htm https://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/OldRag/ Disclaimer: I'm a novice; please take care of yourself out there. What we're about

Psalm 19:1-4 The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork.

The purpose of this group is to meet and fellowship with other believers or those interested in Jesus Christ while celebrating Him in an active outdoor environment. (Matthew 18:20 - For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in the midst of them.)

We are Christians that have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and walk with Him in our daily lives. We also love His extraordinary natural creation. One of the greatest forms of worship is spending time enjoying all He has done. It can be difficult to meet Christians outside of our respective churches; this is a way to expand your group of Christian friends that enjoy doing the things we outdoors enthusiasts love, all while glorifying God!

All are welcome to join regardless of their background and religious affiliation. We respect each other and our differences, but maintain that the core belief of this group is based on the acceptance of Jesus Christ alone. If you are not a Christian, that is OK, just keep in mind you will be surrounded by them, and we love one another and will love you! :) This will be an environment where we can freely share the love and knowledge of Christ without judgment. It is also a place where others can learn of Christ and accept Him as their Lord and Savior, if they wish. In addition to our outdoors activities we can discuss the bible (a favorite topic), our faith, ask questions, share testimonies, understand and get to know our different backgrounds and strengthen each other in our walk with Christ and in our lives. The primary purpose of this group is to bring to believers in Christ together through doing things we enjoy, so talking about Jesus will be very likely and even encouraged.

We would love to have an active group, so if you are interested in leading an event in a particular area, please contact us, and we might reach out to some of you for help. Allow God to use you to expand his kingdom with your talents! Please keep the group in prayer as that will be the key to our success and plans God has for us and His glory.
