yes there are 8! from what i read in trail notes, i will look at the map soon. What are your thoughts on that? I was discussing with Renee to move this to the spring and propose another hike this weekend considering there are no fires anywhere except west VA. I was thinking 3 ridges...I am looking for a loop that may be similar in distance. Renee would join Saturday so maybe we can do a shorter loop (like 3 ridges) or something else. Thoughts?

    • Renee

3 ridges is doable as a day hike..if you decide to do that one this weekend, I may join you but do it as a dayhike.

Renee & Andy - sorry for all of the multiple messages. I dont have all cell numbers. Here are options:

    1. Do this hike this weekend - Andy & I start Friday evening.
    2. Move this to spring and do a Saturday-Sunday shorter loop:
    - Three Ridges - 14.4 miles - 3,960 elevation
    - St Marys Wilderness - 10-15 Miles (5 Miles is out and back to a waterfall)
    - Brown Mt Rockytop loop - 18.3 miles in Shennandoah

I have done St Marys, and 3 ridges is well travelled. I am not familiar with Brown Mt. Let me know

Many trial notes recommend setting aside three days for Wild Oak, as well due to the difficulty.

Brown/Rocky top has river crossings as well. Lol. Id like to do 3 ridges. It is pretty strenuous, if we added the priest, that would add another 4.8 miles

No fires are permitted in gwnf at this time. Sadly there was a fire that burns most of mt pleasant scenic area

All the rain we had this week, I don't think there is a risk, we'd have a harder time finding dry wood to burn.

    • Katrina

Yes the rain was necessary for the drought conditions. What time do you plan to get to the trailhead

  • Katrina

Hello folks. Please update your RSVP of you are unable to attend. I plan to leave dc area early, between 2-3pm so I can potentially find a campsite a few miles in. Let me know if anyone would like to meet at Centerville or at the trailhead. If I don't hear from anyone I may assume you aren't able to come. Let me know if you have questions. Weather looks appropriate, cold nights so make sure you have what you need to stay warm.

Morning all...I woke up today with symptoms of a cold. :/ I will let everyone know by tomorrow if I need to move the trip. It wouldn't be a problem except for the rain. Dec 3rd is the back up option. Can everyone make it if it comes to that?

    November 16

    • Renee

Dec 3 is even better for me :-)

Hello ... This will be a challenge then. The plan is to hike 2-2.3 miles an hour and so at least 14 miles the first day. With the weight of a full cold weather pack that could be tough. Do you have any backpacking gear? There are three article links in the description that lead to to reis site that goes through what's needed for cold weather. It is a lot of stuff. You wouldn't need it all but if you don't have anything it's a lot. This is an intense Bp trip if you haven't done long hiking or this before and probably not the best one. For ppl that haven't bp it is good to start with trips that are under 10 miles a day and work their way up.

Hello folks. Check the weather. I can live with it as it doesn't appear it will be a downpour Saturday. Rain could dampen our ridge walk though. We can monitor it. I will also take a picture of the map and post where I'd like to camp Friday evening. It's a few miles in. I will send out an email Thurs with final details

Hello all - I am working on a route for the trip. I will post map and all shortly. We will be doing over 10 miles a day. If you have not backpacked or had extensive hiking this may not be the best trip, reach out if you have concerns. I will need to verify capabilities for those that have not been out before. Also will need to bring cold weather gear. Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.
