Hello everyone, kind of getting a feel for the site >.>

I see this is an awkward time to start going to this, but I still hope people will be there and will not fight. I just want to see how it works.

We won't fight! We're not that kind of group. Really. (I should have added a wink to my comment to Daniel. I really was teasing.) Please don't be concened. I think this will generate some good conversation about what the prompts are for and what we are all looking to get from them. You as a newcomer may have some really good input!

Hey, Blayze! I hope you do attend. I made a bit of a misstep with the prompt and we'll definitely be talking about that, but there won't be any arguing. We're generally a very laid back, non-confrontational group. See you there!

Oddly enough, Jon and I had not anticipated a negative reaction to a prompt about Hitler. Yes, I am aware of how that sounds, and in retrospect I apologize for not seeing that likely possibility. It probably is a generational or worldview gap, but we were excited to be challenged to take a universally recognized monster and examine him from a difficult perspective. It could have been tragic, it could have been offensive, it coud have been irreverent, but it would definitely have been different. And as many of us do take our work to the dark or offensive at times, I didn't think anything of encouraging it in the prompt. But looking back, expecting or forcing it on everyone was too much. In the future, I may go dark in my writing, but for the actual prompt we'll get better results if we keep the starting point at a friendly "G" rating.

Just to clarify about the prompts, they're *writing* prompts, not essay prompts--merely a point for germinating ideas. They don't have to be taken literally, and usually turn out better when they're not. All we have ever asked is that submissions have some tangential relation to the prompt. The point of the contest is challenge us to write something, anything. This one is definitely a challenge, probably one of the most peculiar one's we've had in awhile. There's a lot of different angles you can use to tackle this one, such as satire or ridicule. You could flip it on this head and take "best" to mean "worst". And of course, the prompts are totally voluntary. You're free not to write for any reason.

agree with Lesley. also giving a writer's prompt re: Hitler's 3 best ideas is not a pleasant intro to a newcomer. perhaps Hitler's best idea would've been to repent and ask the Jews' forgiveness - but he never would consider such a thing!

Can anyone else hear the horrified silence? Because I sure can!

And I should probably be less amused by it.

      Yes, Daniel, you should.

I think we've just found a topic that has brought forth a generation / experiential divide to our group.

Challenge mode: Make it a children's story.

I'm sorry. I know we don't really know one another and I don't know your sense of humor. But I must say this taking things WAY too far.

While I believe in free speech, I also believe Hitler was evil and his horrific actions are not something that should ever be taken lightly no matter how far removed we are. Therefore, I won't be writing for the prompt either.
