What we're about

The Conscious Church host events that are designed to get you to think and to grow by challenging yourself and exploring new concepts. We discuss a wide range of topics including self-improvement, finances, philosophy, sociology, science and religion. We also host activities such as our annual backpacking trip on the North Country Trail. We are non-theist and seek to find answers through science as opposed to historic scripture. Whether secular or religious, all are welcome.

Group Discussion - Understanding Hate

1438 Division Ave S

This is a three part discussions to be held on Friday, May 31, Friday, June 7, and Friday, June 14 from 6:30pm - 8:00 p.m. on the topic of understanding hate. Our primary references will be the book The Opposite of Hate by Sally Kohn and The Distinctions document by Daniel Holland. We will be meeting at the church office which is in the same building as Conscious Resale, 1438 Division Ave S, Grand Rapids, MI 49507 (corner of Division and Garden). Please use the front door on Division Ave. The store closes at 6:00 p.m. so come early if you want to check out the store. We have extra copies of Sally's book and The Distinctions in the Church library if you would like to check out a copy. We are only open on Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 6pm. The Saturday of Memorial Day weekend we are closing at 3:00pm. Or, pick up a copy when you come to a meeting. Sally's book is available at most major book sellers. I typically buy used books on Alibris.com at significant savings over the cost of new books. Reading The Opposite of Hate took me on an eye-opening journey into my past and into deep contemplation about what makes me who I am, and about what makes everyone else who they are. Part of the reason I founded The Conscious Church is to help others to learn to be accepting of people who are not like themselves, and to teach how we can help others to grow. For this to be possible we must come to understand what combines to make us who we are including our biases, our prejudices, and our hates. We need to understand what hate really is and to recognize it in its many forms. We need to learn to overcome these obstacles so we can build better and more inclusive communities. In so many ways society, culture, and tradition teaches us to hate. We will learn to recognize hate and how to overcome it. One of the primary documents of The Conscious Church is The Distinctions. It sets forth that we are responsible to each other to make this world and the societies in which we live better places for everyone. At this time you won't find The Distinctions online as we are in the process of building our website. Copies of The Distinctions will be available at the meeting. It is not necessary to attend all three meetings. You should find the discussion informative regardless of the number of sessions you attend. For our first session on this topic we will discuss what is hate, why we hate, and how we hate. For the second session we will discuss how socialization and group acceptance can lead to hate and how much of hate is unconscious. For our third session we will discuss systems of hate and how hate becomes pandemic. These sub-topics correspond to the six chapters in Sally's book. We will also discuss what is the opposite of hate. There are many sections of The Distinctions that are applicable to this discussion. We will incorporate some of The Distinctions into our discussion. This discussion group is a new approach for The Conscious Church. If you have ideas for improvements or suggestions for topics please let us know. There is no charge to attend. I hope you can join us.
