Welcome my Extraordinary Friend!
Of course life can be unfair with the experience of loss and hardship. In hard times we can still reach out to others and lighten their load even under our own heavy burden. This is a great way to help others while helping ourselves. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said: " know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Our good deeds and acts of kindness create the love we need and want in our lives. Remember that happiness is always here for you. All you have to do is realize it and then you will be able to use it.

PBS is airing "Happiness 101 with Tal Ben-Shahar" on various local channels since early August pretty much in every state around the country.
Author Tal Ben-Shahar taped a pledge drive with WGBH-Boston earlier this year. His segment will be included in pledge breaks airing on national PBS affiliate stations that began this August. I have seen Happiness 101 and really loved it. I recommend that you find the time it airs in your area and watch it.
If your channel does not air this, it's available to buy for ~$23 Here is the link: Happiness 101 with Tal Ben-Shahar

"Do you want to be Perfect? Or do you  want to be Happy?"
"Every person concerned with success, and that includes most of us - should read this book." - Sonja Lyubomirksy, author of The How of Happiness
"This book will inspire you to realize your innate potential for happiness and awaken the genuine aspiration to change, while avoiding the trap of perfectionism and the unrealistic demands of the ego." - Matthieu Ricard, author of Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill
"Tal Ben-Shahar has done it again! In Happier, he invited us to rethink our assumptions about happiness and what it depends on. Now, In The Pursuit of Perfect he invites us to discard the fallacy  that the pursuit of "perfect" is the best indicator of success and happiness." - -Nathaniel Branden, author of The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem

Life is Now
I am happy to announce Rabbi Pliskin's 24th book:
is NOW
Creating Moments of Joy, Courage, Kindness, and Serenity.
By Rabbi Zelig Pliskin

It is a hardcover, 304 page book published August 2009 by ArtScroll / Mesorah

Where are we right now?

Rabbi Zelig Pliskin's many best selling books serve as a road map to life, a kind of GPS navigation system showing us the route to joy, directing us to happiness and fulfillment, pointing out the detours along the way. Now, Rabbi Pliskin reveals the secret of where we are, or, rather, where we should be:

Right now, we are here. In the present. In the now.

Many people live in the past, brooding over bad choices they'd made or someone's negative behavior to them years ago. Others live in the future, worrying about events that may happen - or may not. In Life is Now Rabbi Pliskin shows us that the way to achieve lives of joy, courage, love and serenity is to live in the moment, to see the wonders of the present, to feel gratitude for what is happening right this minute. Right now we're writing our life stories, and we can choose how the script will read. Right now we can put behind us self-doubt, anger, frustration.

Right now, we can choose happiness.

Life is Now is about self-acceptance and building your self image; about setting goals and reaching them. With his cheerful good humor and deep wisdom, his vast experience and his almost endless supply of inspiring stories, Rabbi Pliskin shows us how to live better lives, right now.

By Lionel Ketchian

"Strive to realize a state of inward happiness, independent of circumstances." These are the profound words of J.P. Greaves. I do not know who Mr. Greaves was, but I do know he had an understanding of happiness that very few people realize.
I tried to change things and events outside of myself but they could not change enough for me to feel happy on the inside. Then, more than eighteen years ago, everything changed for me. On December 24, 1990, I became aware of my ability to choose to be happy. I have been sustaining that choice and sharing it every since.
The decision to become a happy person has not only benefited me, but also the readers of my articles and people who come to the Happiness Clubs. You can be miserable or you can be happy. It's not the reasons that matter; it's the results. When you are happy, everything works better. Problems either get resolved or they no longer have a negative effect on you. I do the best I can with those things (called life) to change them, and being happy takes care of the rest.

When did the club start? I taught a course on Happiness at Sacred Heart University, CT in the fall of 1999. The class learned to become happy and felt they needed to reinforce what they had learned. They asked me to continue to meet with them as a reminder to choose happiness. We held our first meeting in January 2000 in Fairfield, CT.  We now have 61 Happiness Clubs around the world meeting monthly.

What is the Happiness Club? It is an organization with the purpose to promote the benefits of being happy. This is done through free meetings, free newsletters, the Happiness TV show on CT Cable Television, webinars and an informative website online at: This information goes out to the people in our community, and around the world.

What is the cost? There are no dues or charges, it costs nothing! All it will cost you is the time you will spend to go to a meeting and learn about happiness. I have found that the cost of unhappiness is far too much and is not worth the price we pay for it. What is unhappiness costing you?
What is Happiness? My definition of happiness is that it is an inner state of well being which enables you to profit from your highest thoughts, wisdom, intelligence, common sense, emotions, health, and spiritual values in your life.

What do we teach? It is a rational, common sense approach to learning how to accept a positive view of life and deal with the things we cannot change. Learning to direct your energy toward things that are your choice and in your control, will make you a happier person.

What can you get out of it? You can get happy! It has been proven that being happy benefits your health. Furthermore, being with happy people is highly contagious and spreads like a virus. Happiness is the best self-improvement plan for being a better and friendlier person. Happiness also provides you with the opportunity to socialize, meet new people, and form friendships.
You can have a wonderful time, smile, and laugh a lot! Nice people do so much for everyone around them. Once you have become happy within yourself, you can continue to give to others. If you're not happy, how can you give happiness to others? You can't give away what you don't have. Spend time connecting with yourself and others, this benefits your relationships and in turn, the world you live in.

What is a meeting like? The Happiness Club presents strategies to live your life to the fullest. Speakers, such as doctors, authors and everyday individuals, present ways to be happy each month. We have discussions during every meeting. You have an opportunity to learn from others and express your viewpoint if you choose. The meetings are educational. You take something home with you to use in your life in order to become a happier person. These meetings empower the individual to choose the right tools to take control of his or her life.

Why is unhappiness a problem? When you are unhappy you are at the affect of the negative things in your life. You allow them to have power over you. Being unhappy produces even more negative influences in your life. You experience the unfairness of life in a state of confusion, so you take loss to an unhealthy level. You hurt, you worry, you suffer, you become fearful, you become helpless, and you are unhappy with your life. As a result of this unhappiness, you make bad choices, because your unhappiness prevents you from being aware of the good choices available to you.

Why have a Happiness Club? When you're happy you can increase your endurance for dealing with life's problems. Happiness allows you to make easier decisions, and access the wisdom within yourself! Furthermore, you become more loving and experience peacefulness. Your entire attitude becomes one of greater strength. You become positive and powerful. People notice this change and it begins to positively affect others. Imagine happiness spreading like the common cold. It can! You can make it happen by learning to be happy. You can change the world by taking control of yourself.

What do the facilitators, leaders and the people involved in the club get out of it? We do it because we care about others and ourselves. We do it because we want people's lives to be better, we want them to flourish and help them overcome some tough times. We get to see old friends and meet new friends. We make no money doing it, but we generate happiness and that is it's own reward!.

Where can I learn more about happiness? Come to the meetings, read the Be Happy Zone column in the Fairfield Citizen-News, check our happiness club website, read books.

Why be happy? Why not, is the best answer! Life is short, Be Happy!
Thanks very much for your well wishes on my birthday.  Speciial thanks to Anne Fasanella who went to great lenghts and Jon Van Gorder for all you have done. Thanks for the wonderful turnout, it was great seeing so many friends.

  Gateway to HappinessHappiness Without Approval
If you seek approval, ask yourself why you want it in the first place. The answer is that you view approval as pleasurable and giving you happiness.

Realize how much needless suffering your approval-seeking causes you. This will motivate you to master an attitude that allows you to feel happy even when people fail to show you honor and approval.
It is ironic that something one wants for happiness causes so much unhappiness. By giving up the demand for approval, you will ensure yourself greater happiness in life.

Date:  Second Monday of every month
Time:  10:30 am

We are a group who live in an over 55 community and are happy to be happy!  We just started our club, but already members are excited to be involved with happiness.  If not happy now, when? At last month's meeting, we discussed the decision to be happy and what situations in our lives helped us to make that decision. One of the most interesting experiences was a woman who told us what a wonderful mother-in-law she had and that it was her mother-in-law's happiness and joy that gave her a reason to decide to be happy as well!

At this morning's meeting, we discussed how happiness affects health and did some breathing and laughing exercises. We plan to explore the following subjects in future meetings: Laughter & Joy, Kindness & Compassion, Gratefulness, Spirituality, Pursuit of Happiness, Present Moment Awareness, Amazement and Wonder, Letting Go of the Ego, etc.

I'm excited about being a facilitator for this wonderful group of folks. Thank you, Lionel, for the opportunity to help me express is awesome!! Love & Blessings - Vitamin C. (Vitamin C is the nickname I gave Christine)
