Xmas French film club Monsieur Lazhar- Heart Warming movie

Monsieur Lazhar Oscar Nominated

Rated M

Review by David Stratton

One morning, as the children arrive for classes at a school in Montreal, 11-year-old Simon, EMILIEN NERON, discovers that his teacher has hanged herself in the classroom. This cruel and shocking event will bring about much distress and soul-searching, and the school director, Danielle Proulx, needs a replacement teacher quickly.

She hires M. Lazhar, FELLAG, a recently arrived immigrant from Algeria who claims an impressive CV as a teacher there. But M. Lazhar faces plenty of problems in a school where the aftermath of tragedy lingers on.

Based on a stage play by Evelyne de la Cheneliere, MONSIEUR LAZHAR is a beautifully acted and ultimately very touching film. It's won audience awards at festivals, and was nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar, and there's no doubt that its appeal for decency and tolerance is an important and timely one.

This fish-out-of-water story is set in a school where teachers are practically walking on eggshells because of strict rules about contact with students, a contemporary fact of life for all adults who connect with children on a day to day basis.

Phillipe Falardeau, who adapted the play into a screenplay, can't entirely paper over a few niggling loose ends, but overall this  film is very effective indeed.

This is a heart lie movie anything is possible with some love heart  soul authenticty
