[Update: I haven't been able to update the site or schedule meetups lately due to personal reasons. Apologies for this... I hope to have things up and running again soon...]

Welcome!

The Film Experiment (previously known as Fingal Film-makers) is a collaborate network of film-makers.

Members will help each other get ideas out of our notebooks and up onto the screen. This group will be less about the film industry and more about remembering why we all fell in love with film in the first place. It'll be about exploration and play with the medium in a supportive, positive environment.

The philosophy of the group is that the most important limit to creativity in film-making is not the equipment, but the imagination. The focus is intended to be foremost on being an artist, on working with integrity and on taking pride in excellence in your field (whether it is purely technical, purely creative or somewhere in between).

We encourage membership from those interested in any aspect of pre- or post-production, as well as those who want to work on set .

Note that although formal training is great, it's not required for membership. Autodidacts and amateurs are very welcome (I'm one myself..!)

Why "Experiment"?

The word "experiment" doesn't necessarily mean that we make films that are difficult, that test the limits of film grammar or that are non-commercial (though we welcome films that are all of these). In this context the word "experiment" just indicates exploration and play. An experimental film can be a very conventional, commercial one in which its creator is trying something new. And if an artist is new to a medium, every film is an experiment.

Eraserhead was clearly an experimental film; but so in their own way were Avatar and Sex, Lies and Videotape.
