Fairview Park Walk

Let's go on an easy walk from Fairview Park to nearby Canyon Park and back!

This walk is an easy round-trip 5 mile hike with minimal gain through the Talbert Nature Preserve to Canyon Park.

Wear sturdy walking shoes such as tennis shoes or light hiking boots that you don't mind getting muddy or dusty. Wear comfortable layered clothing. Be sure to bring a water bottle. We will walk at a comfortable pace, and no one will get left behind. We will descend down the bluffs using the staircase trail with handrails. Most of the walk is on fairly flat dirt terrain or (in some spots) on pavement.

We'll follow the trails as they wind through the Talbert Nature Preserve. When we reach reach Canyon Park, we can climb a small hill and follow the path on the top of the beautiful wind-sculpted sandstone cliffs, where we can stop for a bit and admire the view. Or we can continue on the flat path at the base of the bluffs until we reach the turn-around point.

On our way back, we'll pass by an exotic looking area with dirt mounds built up, resembling large anthills. They are actually a track set up for kids to ride their BMX bikes or pilot their radio controlled cars.

Duration: About 2 hours, depending on the pace of the group. After the hike, we can drive to a nearby  Starbucks coffee house for a beverage.

LOCATION: We will be meeting at Fairview Park located at 2525 Placentia Ave in Costa Mesa. Placentia Avenue runs between Adams Avenue to the north and Victoria Street in the south.

DIRECTIONS & PARKING: Coming from the north: From Adams Avenue head south on Placentia Avenue. Just after passing under the wooden footbridge, turn right onto Fairview Park. Follow the driveway as it curves to the left, and find a parking spot as soon as you see the head-in parking spots. Do not travel down the entire length of the parking lot, but rather park as soon as you can find a spot at the beginning of the parking area.

DIRECTIONS & PARKING: Coming from the south: From Victoria Street, head north and pass through the intersection of Wilson Street. Drive straight through the intersection with Estancia, and just past Estancia High School on your left, turn left onto Fairview Park. Follow the driveway as it curves to the left, and find a parking spot as soon as you see the head-in parking spots. Do not travel down the entire length of the parking lot, but rather park as soon as you can find a spot at the beginning of the parking area.

MEETING SPOT: Meet at the upright bulletin board covered by a small roof near the beginning of the long, narrow parking parking lot. Try to arrive a little early, as we will start the walk at 8:00 am sharp.
