Halloween Holiday Cookie/Baked Good exchange

Do you miss trick 'o' treating?!?! I do!! Other than dressing up in a costume, it was my favorite thing about Halloween, so let's get together and do a grown up treat exchange!

This will be in the coffee bar open community area of the San Pedro Market Square downtown San Jose. We will gather there and get some coffee/tea at the cafe in the space, and have time to socialize and hang out before exchanging our treats! This is a cozy fun space that is very welcoming of groups o' geeks! (I go there a lot with my art meetup that I organize)

Also, if people want to have some lunch, or breakfast, there are some other bistro places in this open market space so you can balance out your sugar rush with regular food (links below).

Rules:

Must bake or make the "treat" yourself - NO store bought goodies allowed!!

Make at least 2dozen (24) of your treat to share and exchange

Must bring ingredients list to display next to your goodie

**optional to share recipe too

Must purchase some tea or coffee ($3 max) or alcohol at the bar at venue so we are legit customers!

========================

There are a ton of fun resources out there, I recommend googling "halloween recipes"

alternatively pinterest is loaded with good stuff: http://pinterest.com/search/?q=halloween+recipes

========================

COSTUMES OPTIONAL !!!

Remember to bring a bag or container to take your goodies home with you!!

VENUE:

Parking is FREE downtown on Sundays. If you park in the garage you can get your voucher validated at the bar inside the market!

San Pedro Square Market is located at 87 North San Pedro Street and West St. John Street and continues over to 100 North Almaden Blvd - look for the people with halloween treats!!

    I can't remember the name of the lady from Taiwan I met today who made the little wraps with the candied ginger inside but - OMG SO GOOD!!! Could you give me an exact recipe so I can try making those myself? Seems like they'd be pretty straight forward - but I wanna make sure I'm not forgetting any ingredients, or that I'm not messing up any steps!

      The ingredients are Raw slice almonds toasted with Star Anise power, Trade Joe's uncrystallized candied ginger sliced to small pieces, wrapped inside wonton wrap. Organic egg stirred with raw red sugar to adhere seaweed sheet, then baked at 410 until turn golden.

    Oh, and for anyone who was interested in making your own gummy candies: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/acid-jellies-recipe/index.html

    Though I haven't tried it yet, in theory you could add 3/4C of /any/ sort of juice (instead of lemon/lime) and it would still work. I'm thinking of trying blueberry/habanero next time.

      PS: 8 envelopes of gelatin is equal to 100ml (1/4C + 2 tbsp + 2 tsp). Smart and Final sells big ol' cans of gelatin powder and it's much cheaper than buying the little boxes of envelopes.

    It turns out I will have my 8yo Godson with me - I hope it's not a problem if I show up with a mini +1. I'll split my treats with him so as to not throw off ratios.

    Some important details - PLEASE READ :

    1) make sure your RSVP is true - if you can't make it you must change it asap so someone on the wait list has enough time to get organized

    2) if you are on the wait list, don't think you won't get in, sometimes things drastically change by Saturday so get your baked good idea prepared

    - SUPER IMPORTANT -

    make sure you bring a container or baggie to take home your baked goods - there is a huge unlikely chance you will be eating all your treats this day, you need something to take it home in.

    =SUPER DUPER UBER IMPORTANT=

    YOU MUST BAKE YOUR OWN TREAT - it can be candy or baked good - but you must make it, do not store buy any treats please. Of course, buying something and putting it together into something new is totally ok - but we want yummy baked super nice tasty treats

    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep your RSVP current, I really want to make sure we have a committed, solid 36 person attendance.

    I invite everyone who is interested to sign up for the wait list, because a lot of things change between now and the event date, and a good third or more of the people signed up now will most likely change their RSVP. Sadness, but true! so please sign up anyway and we will see how the cookie crumbles that weekend....

    Hmm, bring/bake 2 dozen cookies, 32 attendees. So I get less than one cookie from everybody :(. How will I _ever_ choose?

    August 26, 2012

    • Rachael

      Part of me is like 'Ah ha! A challenge!' And the rest of me is like 'no, Rachael, really. You don't need that any cookies.'

      I made it an even 36 attendees.....at the very least people will have something awesome to bring to work on Monday if they cannot eat all the goodies they get Sunday!
