Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve

Who wants to join us and witness the splendor of the poppy fields in the Mojave? It is approximately 63 miles away so expect an hour+ drive. Bring your camera, hiking shoes, SPF50 sunscreen and plenty of drinking water. Parking fee is $10 per vehicle so carpooling is suggested. Mid-April is usually the peak viewing season so our timing couldn't be more perfect.

Here's an excerpt from the park website; "Each spring, the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve comes alive with the seasonal surprises of the Mojave Desert Grassland habitat. The duration and intensity of colors and scents vary from year to year. Although the wildflower season generally lasts from as early as mid-February through mid-May, the park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset...

8 miles of trails through the gentle rolling hills, including a paved section for wheelchair access, make the park a wonderful place to hike and explore any season. Get away from the city and relax in the quietude of the countryside, with only the birds singing and hawks gliding silently overhead. Benches located along the trails make good places to sit quietly and watch for wildlife, such as singing meadow larks, lizards zipping across the trail, gopher snakes and rattlesnakes. If you're lucky, you may spot a coyote or bobcat..."

Unless there are any changes to the weather, I anticipate that we should be in for some harsh lighting conditions. Filters may be in order, along with a wide-brimmed hat.

We were driving back to LA and we were considering driving through the angeles crest highway or Vasquez rocks. We opted for Vasquez due to road closures on the 2.

I your RSVP note, you said you switched venues... Where was the alternate?

Hopefully you have better luck than we had. The high winds kept the poppies at bay.

Hi! Sorry, couldn't join you guys yesterday... I live in Palmdale and I was planning to go there today... You guys saw any 'pops' at all? The pics show only a couple of close-up shots...

After spending less than an hour at the reserve, we switched venues. I was able to get some interesting shots and made the most of the situation. Suzanne was gracious enough to provide lunch, Maryann and Christina were great company.

    Hi rick,
No updates but please checking this thread. If it continues to rain tomorrow morning we may have to postpone this to a later date.

    What's the latest update?

    April 13, 2012

  • Eric

Roy was kind enough to share some pictures with me taken this weekend. Please see above so you are aware of current conditions. These were taken outside the park, with the last one being across from the reserve itself and the first 2 were a few miles away.

Just a quick update. Another Glendale shooter was there today and noted that there were very few poppies visible. I was also informed that there were some poppies and Joshua trees visible from outside the park. If anyone is carpooling or can rideshare, please post so we can pool resources. We can assemble at Porto's at 8 am. Bring food as well as there may be nothing available around that area. I will be leaving around 1 PM but feel free to stay longer.

Our meetup group actually introduced ourselves to the "owner" and he really didn't mind us being around.... along as we were respectful of his "stuff"!

Can we get close to the farm?

    February 13, 2012

Thanks for the info! It's my first time so we'll definitely keep our eyes open.

I have been to this area with another meetup group. We never went into the park. There are plenty of opportunities before and after the park to take pictures and you save the entrance fee/parking.
