Harriman Backpack: Stockbridge Cave Shelter (3 miles)

  • to

  • This location is shown only to members

  • We can meet in the parking lot and hit the trail at around 3:00pm. Let us know if you can't make it out at that time or until Saturday and we can arrange for Chris to meet everyone else at the parking lot at 10:30am on Saturday morning.  Or you can also meet us at the caves.  :)

DRY CAMP - please bring plenty of water with you - there may be a spring, but Harriman has been bone dry this year, do NOT depend on it.

From the parking lot (drive to the right hand side once you enter parking lot), pick up the Yellow Menomine trail (stay to the right at the fork immediately after the picnic tables and gate) to take you across Seven Lakes Drive and northbound along the yellow blazed trail.  Lake should be on your left at this point.

About 1.5 miles in you will intersect the Green blazed Long Path.  Hang a RIGHT here (north) and climb up to Stockbridge Shelter.  Take in the views, then keep going north for about .3 of a mile until you come to a steep climb down to a sizable flat area.  This is camp, and you will see sweet cave area along the rock formation you just descended and a fire pit about 30' away.

Any questions please either PM me or Chris G.

hey tommy. we use odor proof bags. opsak loksak bags can be found at REI. Used in conjuction with an ursack bag is a great combo.

Greetings! This is just a final logistics post to get things in order. Who will meet us on Friday? Who will hike in themselves? Also, who needs me to meet up with them on Saturday morning at 10:30 in the parking lot? Thanks guys - see ya soon.

    • Chris G

Thank you dave! Appreciate you leading the saturday party. No worries - we'll be there early friday evening so we can set camp where we usually do. Is there cell signal? If so, i'll keep you guys informed on the water situation. No need to hike in water if there's a good amount to be filtered. I'll have my gravity fed system.

Yeah there should be 3G at least up there by the caves. The only water source where is the tiny stream just below the lower camp on the fire trail

I'm probably going my bag is only rated for 15 so I might need a liner

    Yesterday

    • David

I may have a liner lying around. I'll bring it if you're coming. Saturday for you? I'm getting there for 9am on Saturday and meeting Chris up at camp.

I'm just worried about the temps

Backpacking this weekend has always been a work-related, as much as a weather-related, issue for me. Looks like I am not going to know my status until late Friday.

Since the trip is a go anyway, I don't think there is any harm in my holding back to see what happens at the last minute? If you see me on Saturday, I expect to be relegated to the worst hanging spot. ;-)

    • David

If Chris and Diana snag the main area at cave level, there are literally hundreds of trees to hang from my friend. I'm sure we'll be just fine, and feel free to modify your RSVP closer to the trip.

Chris : Before i RSVP yes, I would like to meet you guys Saturday morning. I'm not sure if my gear is up to snuff. I have a double layer 10'6" hammock that I put reflectix in, an under quilt which is a doubled up fleece blanket and a 20 * sleeping bag. For shelter I have a winter tarp ( with doors). Do you think this is adequate for the temps?

    1 · 3 days ago

    • Tommy O

Thanks David. I just set up my gear to check everything out. I will probably take you up on that. Damn noobs 😝

    • David

No worries man, I'll bring it with me just in case - it's a 3/4 length 20'F. Between that and the reflectix you might be ok. Might want to think about using something a little more insulative than the reflextic tho, like a legit sleeping pad with an R rating. I'll bring one of those too for you.

Jolly are you doing another shelter?

This one is Stockbridge again. I pulled the Catskills trip due to weather conditions and temps.

      1 · 2 days ago

  • Gordon

I'm currently signed up for he Echo Lake trip the next day, but the forecast is putting the temps there at 15 degrees, which is below the limit of my gear. This trip looks good, but I can't start until Saturday.

No, I go as light as I can, but no lighter. The moment I determined a 3/4 20° wouldn't work for me, it went up for sale on Hammock Forums, and I ordered a full-length HG 20° Incubator. And, I tested the original 3/4 in a place where I was quite safe. If I wasn't cautious, I wouldn't be skipping the other trip!

wait, are you guys not doing the Catskills Saturday 12/10???

    1 · 5 days ago

    • Diana G.

No, we aren't. We dont have snow hiking gear.

    • Chris G

Hey Carla! Originally we were just going to go alone to do some new gear testing. We figured we'd throw it up on meetup since its a nice area for multiple hammocks. We had no idea there was another event that weekend.

id love to go if I can hitch a ride with someone at the metro north station because I'll be coming from the city and is there anywhere to hang a hammock at the site?

    1 · November 28

    • Chris G

Yeah, it's very hammock friendly! I'll get back to you on the possibilities of picking you up!
