Uzumaki - Junji Ito

Nothing says Christmas like a town obsessed with spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals, spirals…

So join us in December for some quite spectacularly messed-up Japanese Horror that is likely to haunt you for the rest of your life! In the ancient tradition decreed by the Great Old Ones, our discussion will be a joint-event with our friends at The Mostly-Harmless Book Club.

Note - this isn’t a novel but a collection of Japanese Manga. We try to do one illustrated/graphic novel at least once a year and this is our 2016 choice. You can find all three volumes of the original manga collected into one beautiful edition on Amazon here. You might also be able to find it in your local bookshop or with the help of your local library.

Here’s the description from Amazon:

Kurouzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in everything from seashells and whirlpools in water to the spiral marks on people's bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi's father and the voice from the cochlea in our inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurouu-cho are pulled ever deeper into a whirlpool from which there is no return!

Sorry but I have a works Christmas do tomorrow. Unless you're offering me free food and drinks I'm out.

Glad I made it for a little while. And just made the train from Kings Cross too. Win! Sorry if I brought the average score down but the love fest needed a counterpoint.
