Human Values Meetup
The topic for our Meetup on Sunday May 27, will be: "Should there be age limits for public employees?" There are a number of reasons to consider age limits for public employees. Such limits already exist extensively both formally and informally for employees in the private sector. Our military has de facto limits via the "if not promoted, then selected out" mechanism. In terms of our federal elected representatives, in the US Senate alone, one source stated there were eight senators in their 80s. 17 in their 70s, 38 in their 60s, 23 in their 50s, 13 in their 40s, and 1 is in his 30s. Additionally, according to the Congressional Research Service, the average age of members of the 115th Congress is among the highest of any Congress in recent U.S. history. Of the above groups how many individuals have early onset dementia or other health problems that may impact their judgments? And at the other end of the spectrum, would we be concerned about school teachers aging into invisible illnesses where their judgment is faulty? Even were we to have a yearly required screening mechanism that gave a thumbs down to public employees (including elected officials) who failed to pass, having many public officials with a geriatric tilt minimizes our utilization of younger individuals who, in general, have more energy and will likely be more creative. The knowledge of very senior individuals can be utilized by their serving in advisory capacities. However, their utilization as decision makers and managers is detrimental to the well being of the organizations in which they serve. We welcome a diversity of views, for open-minded discussion, where we can learn from each other. We meet the 4th Sunday of each month, 12:00-2:00. Lunch and socializing are from 12:00-1:00, with a presentation from 1:00-1:30 (sometimes the presentation starts before 1:00), then open discussion from about 1:30-2:00. ---------------------------------------------------------- Lunch and socializing, with informal presentations and discussions on various subjects related to human values, such as: aspects of society; the arts; social science; current events; nature and evolution; history; science and technology; ethics; philosophy, etc.
