What we're about

Want to meet kindred book lovers and make new friends in a local Meetup Book Club?
Want some ideas for new books?
We read all genres and are purposely inclusive, with the intention of generating lively debate within an eclectic group of people - all faiths, genders and ages welcome.
Come to laugh, share stories and make new friends!

We meet on the second Sunday of each month at 5pm (though sometimes we skip a month because of public holidays etc, so keep an eye on the calendar)

Our venue is The Old White Lion pub, right next to East Finchley tube (just turn right as you exit the station and you'll soon see it).

Please have a good look round the pub as we may be sitting anywhere. Look out for copies of the book! Or people with Kindles! Grab a drink from the bar and join in the discussion...

We choose our books for discussion at least two months in advance, so everyone has time to get and read the book. Therefore, at each meetup, the following month's book has already been chosen but we need to choose the book for two months ahead.

At the end of our discussion on each month's book, we ask attendees for suggestions for books to discuss in two months' time. We then vote, by show of hands, for the book that we'll discuss then.

February meetup: "Nostromo" by Joseph Conrad

The Old White Lion

We will be discussing "Nostromo" by Joseph Conrad. Hope to see you there. ------------- A voluntary contribution of 50p to £1 is requested from all attending each meetup towards the cost of us hosting the group on Meetup.com. ------------- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nostromo-Penguin-Classics-Joseph-Conrad/dp/0141441631/ (and many other editions) Nostromo, published in 1904, is one of Conrad's finest works. One of the greatest political novels in any language, Nostromo enacts the establishment of modern capitalism in a remote South American province locked between the Andes and the Pacific. In the harbour town of Sulaco, a vivid cast of characters is caught up in a civil war to decide whether its fabulously wealthy silver mine, funded by American money but owned by a third-generation English immigrant, can be preserved from the hands of venal politicians. Greed and corruption seep into the lives of everyone, and Nostromo, the principled Capataz, is tested to the limit. Conrad's evocation of the great Latin-American landscapes, the ferocity of its politics, and individuals swept up in imperial ambitions has never been bettered.

March meetup: "Rachel Ray" by Anthony Trollope

The Old White Lion

We will be discussing "Rachel Ray" by Anthony Trollope. Hope to see you there. ------------- A voluntary contribution of 50p to £1 is requested from all attending each meetup towards the cost of us hosting the group on Meetup.com. ------------- https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Rachel-Ray-Oxford-Worlds-Classics/dp/0199537763// (and many other editions) This is Trollope's most detailed and concise study of middle-class life in a small provincial community - in this case Baslehurst, in the luscious Devon countryside. It is also a charming love-story, centring on sweet-natured Rachel Ray and her suitor Luke Rowan, whose battle to wrest control over Baslehurst's brewery involves a host of typically Trollopian local characters.

April meetup: "The Immortalists" by Chloe Benjamin

The Old White Lion

We will be discussing "The Immortalists" by Chloe Benjamin. Hope to see you there. ------------- A voluntary contribution of 50p to £1 is requested from all attending each meetup towards the cost of us hosting the group on Meetup.com. ------------- https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Immortalists-knew-date-death-would/dp/1472245008/ It's 1969, and holed up in a grimy tenement building in New York's Lower East Side is a travelling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the date they will die. The four Gold children, too young for what they're about to hear, sneak out to learn their fortunes. Such prophecies could be dismissed as trickery and nonsense, yet the Golds bury theirs deep. Over the years that follow they attempt to ignore, embrace, cheat and defy the 'knowledge' given to them that day - but it will shape the course of their lives forever.
