The Hare With Amber Eyes, by Edmund de Waal, is not about Ireland, but is a family memoir about the Ephrussis family, noted bankers from Paris and Vienna in the 19th and early 20th centuries. When Edmund inherits a collection of Japanese netsuke from an elderly uncle, he decides to trace how these ivory figures came to be with his family, and in doing so tells a gripping tale of the ups and downs of the Ephrussis. Beautifully and gracefully written.
