Hour of Code - Celebrate Computer Education Week! (ages 8-15)

To celebrate Hour of Code and Computer Education Week, The Iron YardTechStart, and eSmart Recycling are offering a class for 8-15 year olds, where you'll have a chance to build a game from the ground up! This free class is for kids aged 8-15, and adults need to accompany the child during the class. The students will bring their own laptop to the class then will be guided through a code-based lesson that teaches basic programing concepts and will help them build a game.

The Iron Yard has partnered with eSmart Recycling to donate 15 fully refurbished laptops to Tech Start to guarantee the sustainability of their programs and to make sure every kid, even if they don't have access to technology, is able to have to a laptop. Join us to see the official delivery before Hour of Code!

Please sign up and tell us the name and age of your child(ren) attending.

If you sign up and later find out your child cannot attend, please let us know immediately, so that your RSVP can be changed and opened up for other students.

Please read the FAQs below as they may answer your questions. For additional questions, please contact our Campus Director Toni Warren at [masked].

FAQs:

What ages are the classes open to?
We welcome all kids ages 8-15.

What kind of computer will the students need?
Both Macs and PCs are welcome! Please bring a fully-charged laptop and a laptop charger to the class. Please make sure that the laptop is in good working shape so we don't spend the class trying to fix computers when we can be learning.

Any programs/software that need to be installed on the computer?
We will be using a web browser, and any will do.

What is the cost of the class?

FREE. The Iron Yard believes strongly that programming must be accessible at all ages, and kids classes are one way we inch toward making that belief a reality.

Do the students need to know how to touch-type?

No, excellent typing skills are not required.

What do students need to know before taking the class?

The course is for beginners. Imagination and love for computers are the only requirements for the class (though everyone will need to bring their own laptop).
