I had great fun! It was really nice to meet and fly with fellow hobbyist! We should do this more often! As something different, I managed to get a couple of guys to fly fixed wing as well. They both did very well.
We normally fly in the middle of the big dirt lot. Unfortunately, the contractor is using it as a temporary dump for dirt. They are suppose to remove the dirt again after they finish up on a campus project. Hopefully soon. The dirt lot has lots more room than the parking lot, so much easier to fly from. Hopefully they'll be finished before our next flying meetup.

I'm bringing a label maker, in case anyone wants to put their contact information on your gear in the event you have an errant flight at some point. I forgot to put it on mine and almost didn't get it back the other week.

By the sounds of it, I'm guessing there are no charging stations around, huh?

As a reminder, here are the rules for the field:
-Unload your aircraft and equipment in the center of the field.
-Move & park your vehicle in the parking lot (The police don't want to see vehicles in the lot, besides you don't want your vehicle damaged from an errant landing).
-Don't fly over the dorms or parking lot.
-Don't fly FPV over the campus or Home Depot Soccer Stadium.

I'm going to try and get there early too. Got a daughters graduation party later in the day so have to cut out early anyway.

Fyi, the winds usually start to pickup around 10am. So if you want to fly in calm conditions, I'd show up as early as you can. Now that said, with weather&winds being somewhat unpredictable at times, it'll make a liar out of me. I usually fly there sometime between 8-9am, with success.

I fly primarily out of Apollo Field, also referred to as the Sepulveda Basin (Woodley and Balboa in Van Nuys). It's an AMA field with 600ft paved runway, and three separate sub-fields for foamies, helis/multis, and control line. Come check us out!

I'll be out of town on the 29th, otherwise I would definitely go! Count me in for the next fly day.

I've flown FPV at CSDH with Bob before and had a great time. One consideration from my experience, unless you have tall landing gear I recommend you bring a tarp with weights or a large mat to put on the ground*(edited) for your multi-rotor to takeoff from and land. Since the lot is comprised entirely of loose and dusty dirt, your multi-rotor will likely become covered in a layer of dirt otherwise. Also, there is no shade unless you provide your own, so be prepared to spend time in the sun!

    Happy flying!

I will say I will try and make it, I have to travel 2 1/2 hrs away if the traffic isn't bad getting there

    June 23, 2013

  • Bob O.

The field is basically a big dirt lot, so the location shouldn't be a problem. However some kids have no fear and may want to get a close up look at the copters., not god if they are under power. Keep a close physical contact and you should be ok

Is it safe for small children to be around? Need to vacate the house sat as my fiancé is studying for CA architect supplemental exam, so I thought I'd bring our 1 year old to see some flying robots :)

Here's the Google Earth coordinates for the Cal State Dominguez Hills flying site: 33°51'41.13"N, 118°15'6.39"W
Try it out and comment. We usually fly all sorts of RC there on the weekends and sometimes during the weekdays with no problems. The field belongs to CSDH and is uncontrolled, so I don't know of any immediate plans for it. Its always been open when I go to fly RC. A friend has flown FPV there and though it was good place for learning FPV flying. CSDH police said its ok to fly as long as you don't fly over the dorms and the parking lot. There's plenty of room to fly big RC planes and multirotors. I fly my 3 meter motoglider there with no problems.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to meeting some of the players in this very new sport. We're really in on the ground floor of this thing.

Thanks for the location info. I'm looking forward to seeing some of you again and meeting other members who didn't make it to the meet up.

The easiest way to get to the field is get on Central Ave, then turn west on Glenn Curtiss (which would be Perimeter Rd on the campus). Follow the road for about 1/4 mile and the flying field will be on your right. Unload your aircraft and equipment in the center of the field and then park your vehicle in the parking lot.

Going to try. Need to rebuild my QAV500 but if parts arrive in time, I'm in.

My QAV took a nasty fall Sunday, but parts are on the way and if I can get it flying in time I'm going to try to make it.

In Carson, check out the Dominguez Hill University south east vacant lot. Its approx 500'X750'. Its flat and we have been flying RC fixed wing, heli and multirotors there. The wind usually picks up around 10:00am, so its best to get there very early am. Its an uncontrolled, AMA unsanctioned field, but we've never had problems flying there. The university's police said its ok to fly there as long as you don't fly over the dorms or parking lot when there are cars parked.

We are looking for a large flying field centrally located between OC and LA county for this fly-in. Please post your suggestions below. Thank you!
