We Take The Mantra Room Afloat

Mellow sounds, ecstatic dance, beautiful views, fresh breezes, amazing food and blissful kirtan; oh what joy for the soul – Let the music set you free!

I must admit I was like a kid again. Counting the sleeps until the kirtan cruise. I absolutely love kirtan and attend The Mantra Room on a regular basis, but I just loved the idea of taking The Mantra Room afloat.

It was close to 6.30pm on a beautiful, balmy Friday night and 120 of us watched from the wharf as the boat slowly made its way down the Brisbane River to a serene backdrop of the setting sun. Dusk was upon us and we were about to board the “Lady in Red” for a fun-filled kirtan cruise. As the boat approached, we could hear the singing of Om Hari Om with harmonium and violin backing. We all entered the two level boat., most of us heading to the upper deck, where it was open to the cool and refreshing breezes. Some preferred the lower deck, which was converted into a comfy chill-out lounge. There was a platform at the front of the top deck where the members of the band were congregating and setting up their instruments. Once everyone was aboard the boat left the wharf and headed down the river towards the amazing city lights.

There were a number of different kirtan leaders rotating throughout the night, providing a variety of different styles, beats and Mantras. At one stage there was a Gauranga breathing session where the transcendental sound Gauranga was added to the breath. It began mellow and meditative and gradually built to a powerful climax as 120 voices culminated together to fill the atmosphere with this beautiful Mantra.

CruiseThere was also a talk given by Kenaram on the wisdom of the ancient Bhavagad-gita. He described how we are not these temporary material bodies, but are actually eternally spiritual in essence. He went on to describe how the singing of the Mantras give us deep eternal happiness and fulfilment, and completely satisfies the soul.
About half way into the night, delicious platters of finger food was served. Something about fresh air and a good kirtan really increases the appetite. We were all ravenous, or at least I was. There was a delicious variety of vegetarian finger food, including inari, sushi, kebabs, pakoras, bruschetta, paneer curry and rice, veggie sausage rolls and much more. Even during dinner the band continued to chant and by this stage the tempo had increased and people were starting to sway, clap and dance.

The last hour was a wonderful mix of different tunes and Mantras that had everyone up and dancing. It was so much fun, you just couldn’t help but dance to the wonderful musical rhythms. By this stage all my worries seemed so far away and I felt relaxed and carefree. Those Mantras really do work!

Suddenly it was 9.30pm and the boat was making its way back to the wharf. Wow, the night seemed to go so quickly. It was sad it had to end, I was enjoying myself so much. However I was told that there would be more cruises coming up!
