What we're about

The Monarch Writers (https://www.facebook.com/groups/STLMonarchWriters/) is a St. Louis based writing group, founded in September 2017, for writers who take their writing seriously and want to move their projects forward from conception to completion.

We try to provide a space for those working on fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, in any style. Short story crafters, novelists, flash fiction devotees, essay & article exigents are all welcome.

The Monarch Writers meet each and every Saturday for WRITE-IN sessions, at the Hartford Coffee Company (except the Third Saturday, when we move to Mokabe’s Coffeehouse due to a concert night hosted at the Hartford on those days.) These meetings are designed to be a long ‘Write-In’ session where you can bring whatever you are working on and spend with your project. We try our best to let people do their own thing, but often have good discussions at points through the day, though we’ll also do word wars or get down to work for some quiet table time too. But if you like, there is a special annex building out back at the Hartford that is reserved for quiet and you can retreat there if you really want to buckle down, or you can just sit adjacent to the group and work on your own.

In addition, there are the Monday Meetings, on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. We have a theme for the month, and usually a short reading that we read aloud in the meeting and discuss. The themes will be posted ahead of time on the meetup events so please follow along to stay up to date. I’ll mix the heady topics we broach here with a practical writing topic, regarding either an aspect of the craft itself, techniques, or the life of the writer, and am open to suggestions!

We'll also throw out occasional prompts for pieces and follow up by reading those pieces back to the group in subsequent meetings. As well we like to share online resources of classes and such that a few of us might do together at a time, such as the Gale courses available through the public library. So if you know any good ones please share!

We will also try to broach the questions of what is blocking our progress, through DISCOVERY. This might entail simply bringing up something in the discussion of the article, or even something like doing a tarot reading or other divination to 'see ahead' on the path of a character or plotline, as I like to play with.

If you ever want me to bringing in a deck of tarot cards, or just to use the app on my phone, let me know I can give you a reading at the Monday meetings or the Saturday write-ins.

And we'll give a preview of next month's theme at the fourth Monday meetings and strive to keep the conversation continuous and connected. For, I believe making connections is how stories happen.
