Living the life of a writer is as beautiful as much as it is a struggle. Over the course of a writer's life, she will face much rejection and heartbreak, but also a deep connection to herself and the world around her. Often times, that journey can be a lonely one when friends who don't write don't quite understand the obstacles we must overcome in order to put the pen to the page day after day. When we do build writing relationships, they usually revolve around critical feedback about our work instead of celebrating what's great about it.
This group's mission is to provide a safe place to discuss writing topics, the publishing industry, and to share our work just for the enjoyment of having someone listen. We strive to support and encourage in a positive atmosphere, rather than tear down types of art and venues for sharing it. We are open to all types of writers--novelists, poets, short story writers, memoirists, bloggers, journals keepers, and anyone else who writes because they can't not write--who are pursuing any type of publication--traditional, small press, indie, or none at all--and who are motivated to become the best writers they can be, always further integrating writing into their everyday lives.
We will have several different types of meetings:
Once monthly we will get together to talk shop, ask questions, brainstorm, and discuss what's happening in our writing lives. This is a great time to get feedback and encouragement when you get stuck or to get that boost of motivation when writing starts to lull. Come bearing a topic, question, or inspirational snippet to share.
Once monthly, we will gather in a private location to share pieces of our current work with the group. Each writer will get five to ten minutes to read and will then receive encouraging feedback from "readers"--people who just genuinely want to listen to your story. Space will be limited and clapping, food, coffee, and wine will be required.
The group will choose a book on a (mostly) monthly basis to read and discuss. The topics will revolve around writing life, goal setting, and delving deeper into our connection with the page.
On occasion, Jamie (me!) will hold workshops to provide information and feedback to further your journey toward publication or living a writing life more in sync with your writing goals. To request a workshop or workshop topic, email your organizer (me!).
