Flat Rock Ranch (Mountain Bike) [Intermediate+]

A trip to flat rock ranch.  There is a lower and upper loop that converge at the entrance so we can do one or the other or both loops.  We will start with the lower loop which is about 15 miles.

This may be a higher level intermediate ride. There are plenty of smooth sections but it is not as flat as all the local parks we have gone to ride. The climbs can be pretty demanding but the downhills are really long, smooth and very nice.

You can prepay and download the waiver here but they have them at the entrance also and you can pay there.

http://www.flatrockranch.net/daypasses.html

Day pass is $7

EVERYONE MUST FILL OUT A WAIVER

Here is some of my usual stuff:

There are smooth parts and rocky parts and any part that makes you uncomfortable you can walk though it. Make sure you havewater (3+ liters), sun block, some food, and wear a helmet. We will be riding for about 3 hours. When we ride we will have some rest stops along the way to let everyone catch their breath. I will only be there only if there are people who RSVP "YES" by the RSVP deadline. The deadline to rsvp is the day before the meetup.

Rain cancels this event.

I will probably be wearing black shorts and a blue shirt. Look for the dark green mountain bike.

We will do the 15 mile loop first and then return to the entrance. Once you start the loop you are in it for the entire loop since there are no shortcuts or paved sidewalks to lead you back.  If we do both loops the ride adds up to about 27 miles.

Directions: Go north on I-10.  Take Exit 524 and stay on US-87BUS going into Comfort.  Turn right on FM473.  Turn left on Flat Rock Creek Road.  Continue until the road ends and you will run straight into the gate and see the ranch sign. Open the gate and get in then close the gate.

Absolutely a great time. Keeping an eye on my shoulder to see if I can make it Sunday.

Ride started at 8:40. A fast group and a regular group. The ride was another adventure. Fun times. Really enjoyed my time there and I feel good right now.

Ha! No doubt, Ross. Mine was doing something too. You probably heard it screeching while I was riding behind you. I still have to take it apart and see what's going on in there. Think how badass you'll be next time out! ;-)

Tony and Richard don't worry about it. There have definitely been times when I am the one getting dizzy, having stomach pain, or not feeling well in some other way and I have to stop the group. It happens. You all just needed to rest a little more during one of our breaks or maybe you did not eat right, drink right, sleep right, or something else the day before. It was getting hot too. I tried to make sure I kept an eye on everyone and stopped if we got too far separated. It was still a nice time on the trail and we all enjoyed ourselves.

It was not even Tony and Rich that slowed the group down. Overall it was me!

Great group to ride with. Just felt bad about slowing them down. Look forward to doing better next time.

At 6:30pm Saturday there is rain on the east side of I-10 in San Antonio. Flat Rock is still dry. Don't know if it will get all the way to Comfort and Flat Rock. Update later.

Ride will take about 3.5 hours. Bring 3 liters of water or a little more for the ride. Sunscreen. Carry an energy bar in your backpack. --Bring an ice chest with some food and drink for yourself and after the ride we can sit, talk, and eat at the picnic table.

Out of curiosity, what do you think the avg pace will be? I'm wondering if I even qualify as a 'slow' rider. Heh I avg about 8mph on the local trails here, but I see a lot of riders on strava making the same trails at like 18mph. So, would I be dragging everyone down if I'm creeping along at around 8mph?

I agree with Frank. Never had any problem keeping up with the group in Leon Creek. I was the slowest guy in the group last time we went to Flat Rock. My lungs were fine but my legs were shot half way through the ride. The climb killed my legs! Make sure your bike is properly tuned and sized to your body or liking, doing so will help you climb better. And DON'T drink beer the night before the ride like my stupid @$$! You will be fine Mike and we will have fun!!!

Thanks guys! That makes sense. I pictured you all flying through this place like Pegasus. Ha! Last time I was there, there was a lone cyclist that was doing just that. He even took the lower loop twice.. and lapped us! I should be okay then.
