We are going to ride McAllister Park after dark on Saturday night. It’s a lot cooler when the sun goes down. You'll need a good light for this ride. If you have a choice, mount your light on your helmet. Handlebar mounts work but are rarely pointed in the direction you need to see when riding twisting single track trails.
We will meet at the front parking lot of Wetmore Elementary school. They have told me it will not be any problem for us to park there at that time of night. Wetmore Elementary is located at 3250 Thousand Oaks Dr, San Antonio, TX 78247. You have to pull in, go past the front of the school then head back towards the exits where there are plenty of parking spaces close to Thousand Oaks Dr. The reason I want to park outside the park is in case of any untimely chain breaks, flats or other mechanical problems, we will not be worried about getting to our vehicles and out of the park before they close the gates at 11 p.m. We will meet around 9:15 p.m. with the goal of riding off by 9:30 p.m. since it doesn’t get completely dark until then. We will ride about 12 miles or so at a pace set by our group. We will ride several technical sections which can be walked around if you are uncomfortable. However, most of the ride will be McAllister’s easy single track trails.
The trails do seem to change when you can only see what illuminated directly in front of you. This can make the easy sections seem a little challenging as you pick up the pace. As usual, you’ll need your helmet and plenty of water. If our group allows, we will ride the loop nonstop.
If it rains, we’ll have to cancel the event.
