  • Azure DevOps: Trackin’ Work & Shippin’ Bits

This will be a joint meeting of the Nashville Microsoft Azure Users Group, the Nashville .NET Developers Group and the Nashville DevOps Meetup. Abstract: Recently Microsoft re-branded the Azure-based Visual Studio Team Services as DevOps in order to emphasize its use in Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment scenarios. But it is much more than that. Azure DevOps is Microsoft's flexible solution for enabling organizations, departments, or even isolated teams to collaborate on the production and deployment of software. It's comprised of tools that allow you to plan and track work; host Git repos; host private npm, NuGet, and Maven packages; create build and release pipelines; and create test plans. This talk is intended to take us end to end to explore how these features work together to allow you to streamline your DevOps process and ship with confidence. This will be a journey through the process of getting and tracking work all the way through deployments using Azure DevOps. Presenter: Carl Kinghorn Carl has been writing and shipping enterprise software for the agricultural industry for the past 10+ years. He is the VP of Software Development at EFC Systems, Inc. and President of the Nashville .Net user group. We will be streaming the meeting in case you cannot get there. .................................................................................................................... • New To Azure?

    Microsoft

The Nashville Azure Users Group has grown quite a bit in the last year. We now have over 900 members. As a result, we have quite a few members who are just starting out with Azure, as well as many who are already proficient with Azure and operating at an advanced level. We do try to mix up our presentations to cover all members interests. We have had everything from introductory presentations, like the Azure Platform Technical Overview that we did in May, to more advanced topics like the June Azure Networking Deep-Dive. For our July meeting we will cater again to those who are new to Azure, or who have not been keeping up to date on the latest Azure developments. This meeting will be a repeat of the Azure Platform Technical Overview that we did in May. If you are in the novice category great. But even if you are more advanced you are more than welcome to participate and share your experience. Presentation Details This presentation will be an architectural overview of the Azure platform, its features and services. Since Azure is a very broad offering, we will focus on the question of what the Azure Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) features are, and when they should be used to solve specific business and technical problems. If you are new to Azure, or not conversant with all its recent enhancements, this presentation will give you a good overview, not too deep, but deep enough to understand what to use when. Agenda • What is Azure? • Why adopt it? • Azure Resource Management • Compute Options • Azure Storage • Databases • Business Continuity (Backup and Disaster Recovery) • Networking • Security • Virtual Desktop • IoT & Analytics • The Future of Azure Presenter: Bill Zack Bill is a Cloud Solution Architect at Stratum Technology Management (http://www.stratum-tech.com/) in Nashville Tennessee where he helps companies adopt Azure the right way. He has been an Azure specialist since before it was called Azure! (~2007 😊) Formerly he was a Principal Architect Evangelist at Microsoft. In that role, he was one of only 24 Azure Subject Matter Experts in all of Microsoft when Azure was launched in 2010. After leaving Microsoft he was hired as an Architecture Consultant by the Microsoft Azure Product Team to provide Architecture and Technical Support for Microsoft customers and partners. He also blogs about Azure at CloudyInNashville.com (https://cloudyinnashville.com/), has published books and white papers and presents frequently at community groups and conferences on (what else?) The Cloud and Azure. 😊 Bill founded the Nashville Microsoft Azure Users Group 4 years ago with only 4 members. Today he leads this group of nearly 900 members.

  • Azure Networking Deep-Dive

    Microsoft

Software-defined networking (SDN) in Microsoft Azure has a tough learning curve and the costs of making mistakes is significant. Join Microsoft MVP Tim Warner for a guided tour of an Azure infrastructure-as-service (IaaS) hybrid cloud deployment. Tim will explain all best practices and "gotchas" through practical demonstration. Tim Warner is a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) in Cloud and Datacenter Management based in Nashville, TN. His professional specialties include Microsoft Azure, cross-platform PowerShell, and all things Windows Server-related. You can reach Tim via Twitter (@TechTrainerTim), LinkedIn or his website, techtrainertim.com. Also, we now have a user group flier (https://1drv.ms/w/s!AkQLFu9MiSL1qs0Wq7wvLzTy08m68g) that you can print and post at work. We want to attract everyone who is interested in Azure. • Azure Platform Technical Overview

    Microsoft

It has been nearly a year since we did this presentation for the group and the size of the group has doubled in that time to over 800 memebers. Some of you may be new to the group, new to Azure or just a bit out of date. This is for you. In IT things are clearly moving from a CapEx to an OpEx model where the focus is shifting from internal data center and hosted applications into the Cloud with its consumption-based pricing model. The lure of pay-as-you go pricing is attractive; but it does carry with it some risk. If you choose the wrong applications to move into the cloud it could wind up costing you more than running them locally or at a hosting provider. It also requires increased discipline related to manage the appropriate allocation and deallocation of Cloud resources. We will start off with a discussion of these considerations, and then dig down into the features supported by the Microsoft Azure public cloud. The presentation will include an architectural overview of the Azure platform, its features and services. Since Azure is a very broad offering, we will focus on the question of what the Azure Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) features are, and when they should be used to solve specific business and technical problems. If you are new to Azure, or not conversant with all of its recent enhancements, this presentation will give you a good overview, not too deep, but deep enough to understand what to use when.
