The "Back to School Picnic" is scheduled for Saturday August 23, 2014.

It will be held at Orchard Beach at the North Picnic Area (1)  in the Bronx.  This is a catered picnic we hold for a group of children being raised by their grandparents.  A great lunch is served, games are played, they hold a raffle and we give every child a backpack filled with school supplies. The event usually starts at 11am and is over at 5pm.  We need volunteers to help at the event with food and plan some games for the children.

Directions to Orchard Beach

Pelham Bay Park, The Bronx

Note: Our Picnic site (OB-North Picnic Area (1) is at the far end of the Parking Lot (north side) near tennis courts/basketball area.  There is usually a $10 parking fee.

When traveling by car there are several ways to approach Orchard Beach.  Two major highways provide access from points north and south: The Hutchinson River Parkway and the Bruckner Expressway/New England Thruway combination.  Both highways have “Orchard Beach/City Island” exits from either direction (whether traveling south from Westchester or north from the southern Bronx and Manhattan) and once you’ve exited, just follow the signs to Orchard Beach.

The major cross-town route in the Bronx is Pelham Parkway.  Take it eastbound past the New England Thruway, over the Pelham Bridge, and make a right at the traffic light.  At the traffic circle, follow the signs to Orchard Beach.

From Manhattan/Brooklyn/Staten Island:

Take the FDR Drive north to the Willis Ave. Bridge exit.  Bear right and head toward the Bruckner Expressway.  Take the Bruckner/I-95 to the Orchard beach/City Island exit.  Go past the war memorial, over the Pelham Bridge, and make a right at the first traffic light onto City Island Road.  Go straight to the traffic circle and follow the signs to Orchard Beach.

From Queens/Long Island:

You can take the Triborough, Whitestone or Throgs Neck Bridge.

From the Triborough, follow the signs for The Bronx and take the Bruckner Expressway/I-95 toward New England.  Get off at the Orchard Beach/City Island exit.  Go past the war memorial, over the Pelham Bridge, and make a right at the first traffic light onto City Island Road.  Go straight to the traffic circle and follow the signs to Orchard Beach.

From the Whitestone and Throgs Neck Bridges, follow the signs for the Bruckner Expressway/I-95 toward New England.  Get off at the Orchard Beach/City Island exit.  Go past the war memorial, over the Pelham Bridge, and make a right at the first traffic light onto City Island Road.  Go straight to the traffic circle and follow the signs to Orchard Beach.

Public Transportation:

Pelham Bay Park can be reached by the IRT No. 6 train to the last stop; the Bx5, Bx12 and Qbx1 buses to the train station; the Bx29 to the City Island Traffic Circle; or Westchester bus No. 45 to the Barlow-Pell Mansion Museum.  Orchard Beach is served by the Bx5 and Bx12 buses during the summer only.  During the Winter, take the Bx29 to the City Island Circle and walk to the beach.

It was great to the priceless smiles on the kids faces. The grandparents were equally appreciative. It was a pleasure volunteering looking forward to doing similar meet ups again!
