Beth's Story:

I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2010 after four years of symptoms. I failed Asacol, Lialda, Imuran, Humira, Methotrexate & Entyvio before electing to have a total proctocolectomy in June of 2016. I have a permanent ileostomy & it has kept me in remission. Remission has allowed me to take a bad experience & use it for good.

I began facilitating the adult support group in June of 2017 because I wanted to help other patients living with Crohn’s disease & colitis, especially those newly diagnosed patients struggling to come to terms with painful symptoms, a disrupted quality of life, and feeling too embarrassed to tell just anyone about their experiences.

I believe that having a solid support system around a patient is imperative to keep them fighting these diseases; especially when they feel like they don’t have an ounce of fight left within them.

Stephanie Lipkin became my co-facilitator in 2018 and we have a passion to continue growing the adult support group so we can reach as many patients & family, friends & caregivers of patients as possible. We kicked off the pediatric support group in November 2018 and hope to watch it flourish, too!

Crohn’s disease has come to define my life in amazing & unexpected ways—it has shaped me into a compassionate, empathetic person. It has made me fiercely determined to raise awareness and end the stigma of a “bathroom disease.” It has given me the courage to call to light the depression and anxiety that plagues so many IBD patients. My disease has truly proven to be a gift because it has brought so many wonderful patients into my life that have become like a second family, and for that, I am grateful.

Today I live a full life with my three children in Carmel. I work full-time in Project Management in the healthcare field and enjoy reading, cooking & writing. I was recently diagnosed with MS, which has made me passionate about living the healthiest lifestyle I possibly can so I can keep Crohn’s disease in remission & MS flares at bay.

If you have any questions about the support group meetings or any other fun events that we have planned, please email me at bethany47905@yahoo.com . I hope to see you at a meeting or event soon!
