This hike is "owned" by Dodger Joe, who will lead us for a return visit of this popular event. Between[masked], this was one of 16 anti-aircraft missile launch sites in the Los Angeles area. It contained ground-based radar that was designed to detect hostile aircraft during the Cold War (source (http://encino.patch.com/articles/back-when-encino-used-to-have-a-missile-base#photo[masked])). Today, you can climb to the top of the original radar tower which provides a spectacular 360° view.
Most of the elevation on this hike is at the beginning. Once we reach the ridge, we will hike along a fire road until we reach the missile site. It is ranked as moderate due to the distance and advanced beginners should be OK on this hike as long as they can handle the distance.
REMEMBER: This is a potluck hike because the radar tower has picnic tables (and restrooms!), so remember to bring something to share, as well as your own fine china, cutlery, crystal glasses and linen napkins.
From the 101 freeway, exit Reseda Boulevard and head south for 2.2 miles. The trailhead will be on the left a little before the stop sign at Golf Course road. There is plenty of roadside parking.
Rain will postpone this hike.
