A few people have requested a hike followed by a beach party, so here we go. Let's to the Ray Miller trail in Malibu, which is a short segment of the famous Backbone Trail. Sadly, these hills were incinerated during the Springs Fire and have not yet recovered, so there isn't much vegetation, but there are Ocean Views the entire hike. We'll go up the Ray Miller trail until it meets the Overlook Trail (which is really a fire road), hang around so we can "ooh" and "aah" at the views, then head back to the trailhead.

From there we'll return to our cars where we can then get our beach party blankets, food/drink to share and we'll all find a spot together on the beach to hang out until someone calls the authorities and we get kicked out or until we run out of tall trail tales, whichever comes first. DRESS WARMLY FOR THE BEACH PARTY, as it can get chilly by the water even if it's a hot day.

There are fire pits on this beach, which strongly suggests they are there to be used. Thus, we will need people to volunteer to bring fuel etc, which you may consider to be your contribution to the potluck.

Distance: 5 mile out & back
Elevation Gain: 1000'
Difficulty: Intermediate, will be too hard for beginners.
Dogs: Not allowed on State Park Trails
Sunset: 7:34 pm, dark by 8:10
Restroom: Yes, near trailhead

Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes, slip-'n-fall.

Directions: NEVER TRUST YOUR GPS. People are forever telling me that they made that mistake and missed the hike. My directions are always accurate: The hike location is close to the West end of the Santa Monica Mountains. If coming from LA or if you take any of the passes from the 101 to PCH, you will go North (West) on PCH until you get to Thornhill Broome Beach on your left, and Pt Mugu State Park/La Jolla Canyon (marked with a sign) on your right. If you are coming from Camarillo or Oxnard, get on the PCH and head toward Malibu until you get to Thornhill Broome Beach on your right and Pt Mugu State Park/La Jolla Canyon on your left. Parking: You can use the free-on-PCH parking if get your car fully off the road. Someone told me that the beach parking is only for campers. Carpooling is highly recommended as there could be many cars along PCH. There is also paid parking by the trailhead, but I'm pretty sure that is only allowed until sunset, so don't park there or you'll get a ticket.
