We just did this hike on Oct 25, led by Mark Theobald, but I am shamelessly plagiarizing his hike because I REALLY want to do the return segment on the Backbone Trail in daylight. We did it in the semi-light of a bright moon, but could tell that the daylight views would be spectacular.

Sunset is at 4:53PM for 11/11/2015 and it will be dark by 5:30 with no moon at all. I expect to be done before it's dark, but just in case, make sure you bring a flashlight for this 2.22 mile, easy hike with only 450 feet in high/low elevation. Here is the elevation profile supplied by Mark:

We'll take a leisurely walk up to the old Triunfo Lookout Tower site where we can hang out for a little while but not too long. After that, we'll backtrack a few hundred yards then drop off the back side of the hill, down to the Backbone Trail. The last 200 feet of this part will be the only (slightly) technically challenging section as it is just a little steep for the loose, dry rocky path. A walking stick will help you get past it with ease.

Once safely on level ground, we will resume our hike until we stop somewhere along the way to watch the sun go down before we continue to the big Sycamore Tree where we will find a hidden trail up to the road that leads to the Lookout and also back down to the start. Here is a picture of the sunset we saw on Oct 25 with the Channel Islands clearly visible on the horizon.

But given that most people will be working, except us bankers and government slackers, I doubt that parking will be an issue. However, you can (and should) carpool anyway, so use the comments section below to share your willingness, and communicate privately to exchange cell phone numbers, social security numbers, etc, so the scammers don't steal your identity.

DIRECTIONS: (READ THESE!!!!!! Mark wrote them and they're good)

Please take a good look at the MAP (,-118.909200) (click on "MAP") to get an idea of distances.

From the 101, go south on Westlake Blvd. and follow it up to where it turns into Mulholland. Continue to the right (west) on Mulholland and follow it for a few miles to the stop sign at Decker Canyon Road. Continue on Mulholland (by keeping to the right) for a quarter mile to Little Sycamore Road (it comes up quick) and turn right (north). After about a mile, Little Sycamore Road turns into Yerba Buena Road (at the LA/Ventura County line). Continue for approximately 2 more miles to a large turnout on the left (south) side of the road where, after 3:45PM, you will see my

red Chevy Equinox.

Total distance from the Mulholland/Little Sycamore intersection to the trailhead is 3.0 miles. If you get to the driveway on the right with the huge anchor chain across it (a private hilltop residence), you've gone about a quarter mile too far.
