The Dos Vientos 5 Mile Loop hike is on the Conejo Open Space Challenge list this year. About 800 feet of gain as hike encompasses the Parkview, Vista Del Mar (with Twin Ponds), El Cerro and El Rincon trails. This hike has a suburban feel and views to the Channel Islands as the trails work their way around and through the community of Dos Vientos in Newbury Park.
Our route starts at Dos Vientos Community Park which makes a great location for a PM Hiker post-hike snacknic, and maybe even some sand volleyball if there's an open court. Meet at the Park (use covered parking area) at 5:15 for 5 mile roller coaster style loop hike that starts at 5:30 PM and will finish as it gets dark.
If another leader is available, a second group may leave at 6:30 PM and do a shorter loop so that most hikers will be back at the park around the same time. Picnic snacks at the park about 7:45 PM. If there is a large turnout, some folks will need to bring extra tables and participants are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on plus own plates/cups/utensils and food or beverages to share.

Would like a co-leader (or two please!) Maybe someone to stake out some picnic area? We are not going to rent the big picnic area at the park which has tables scattered about. There are restrooms at the park. The food can stay in the cars during the hike.
Dos Vientos usually gets a nice ocean breeze in the late afternoon and cools down in the evening so you may want a jacket.
If you want credit towards the COSF Challenge, bring your camera and take pics during the hike to show you did it.

Please allow sufficient travel time for Friday evening traffic which can be very heavy in the Conejo Valley. From LA/SFV direction take the 101 Fwy to the Borchard exit. Stay on Borchard as it travels West across Newbury Park and then takes a turn South and go all the way to the top of the big hill. Dos Vientos Community Park is at the intersection of Borchard and Via Ricardo in Dos Vientos. From Camarillo and beyond take the Wendy Drive exit, turn left on Wendy Drive, turn right on Borchard and continue up the hill.
The usual hiking accessories are appropriate--lug soled shoes, water, hat, trekking poles if you normally use them, etc. May be rattlesnakes, sometimes a bit buggy passing by the ponds on the Vista Del Mar trail, some loose dirt.
Stats: Approximately 5 miles, 800 feet of elevation gain/loss.
Restrooms: At park for start/end of hike, none on the trail.
Please leave your dogs at home.
