2500 & Ascending^^^Mega Potluck @ Parker Mesa Overlook where 2 becomes 1^^^

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  2 hikes, 2 trail heads, 2 groups, 1 final destination!

An intermediate version of this hike will depart from Trippet Ranch parking lot at 3. An advanced version will depart from Los Liones trailhead at 3:30. We will all attempt to converge on Parker Mesa Overlook for a potluck extravaganza celebrating our collective bigness a bit before sunset at 4:46pm.

PM Hikers has grown from 1 (the legendary Kurt) to a thriving 2500 plus member community of hikers! In celebration, please bring something to share and join the festivities on Parker Mesa Overlook at sunset on this Saturday in December. If you like ocean views, then this hike is a must-see, must-do event.

Click here to see the earlier hike's page with LOTS of cool photos and a broader description of the hike from the city side.

So here's the deal.  Try to bring something consumable that you can share with others, liquid and/or finger food.  We'll all meet at the top where you will have stunning views of the Santa Monica beach, downtown LA a bit further to the left, and the southern reaches of Malibu to the right.  We'll have time to watch the sunset and the lights of the city come up, socialize, and then head back our mostly separate ways to the two starting locations.

Hike 1 - From Trippet Ranch - led by Jimbo:

Start time: 3pm PST SHARP

Round Trip Distance: 6 miles, out and back on fire road.
Elevation Gain: Maybe 700 feet up and down.

Difficulty: Intermediate
Dogs: No.  This is in a State Park where dogs are not allowed on hikes.
Restrooms: Yes, at the starting location.
Water Fountain: Yes.

Parking: Free, BUT see very important detail below.

Trail: Fire Road
.
Sunset: 4:46 pm

Directions:  For Trippet, take Topanga Cyn road and watch for the sign for Entrada Road that takes you up to Topanga State Park.  Click the link above.

Parking:  For Trippet, do NOT go to the paid parking lot inside Topanga State Park, or your car will be ticketed after dark! Instead, find free street parking along Entrada before you enter the State Park, but make sure you park only where permitted, which is generally on the left side as you are driving up along Entrada.  Alternatively, you can drive to the top of Entrada, then find parking up there on Entrada or along the other side streets.  From there, it's a short walk back to the little blacktop that enters the State Park.  Just watch for signs so you don't park where you are not supposed to.  The Trippet trailhead is on the far right end of the main paid parking lot near the top of Entrada.

Hike 2 - From Los Liones Trailhead - led by Dave:

Start time: 3:20pm PST SHARP

Round Trip Distance: 5.5 miles, loop straight up to PMO via western ridge, then back down fire road to Los Leones Trail and down this dark and shady trail to the cars.
Elevation Gain: 1500 feet up and down.

Difficulty: Intermediate but with very steep sections and brushy trail . You will sweat!
Dogs: No.  This is in a State Park where dogs are not allowed on hikes.
Restrooms: Yes, near the end of Los Liones.
Water Fountain: Yes, near restrooms.

Parking: Free, BUT see very important detail below.

Trail: Straight up a ridge that will get your heart pounding, less than one hour to Parker Mesa Overlook.
Sunset: 4:46 pm

Directions:  Drive to the end of Los Liones Drive and park, being careful to check the signs that say you must move your car by 9pm.

Known Dangers: Slip and fall, rattlesnakes, even potentially Mountain Lions.

Our hike difficulty categories:

Beginner: No steep sections. Up to 4 miles in distance and no more than 750' elevation gain.
Intermediate: 4-10 miles, and/or up to 2000' elevation gain.
Advanced: More than 10 miles, and/or more than 2000' elevation gain.

Despite some zesty zephyrs, we had a great time. I'm thankful I was able to pass everyone on the trail even though I arrived 46 minutes late 😜. Wonderful wines, cheerful cheeses and lots of other great goodies were had. Thanks to everyone who showed up!

I'm at the los leones trailhead wearing blue jacket and shorts. There is a huge crowd here for some reason so I'll try to find a way to stand out!
