1. CLUB OBJECTIVES
A. To protect and advance the interest of all dogs, to encourage participation in dog related events, to promote good sportsmanship in the training and exhibition of dogs, to enhance the natural abilities of dogs and their handlers, and to nurture the bond between people and their dogs.

B. To exemplify before the general public the highest standards of dog training and to associate with other organizations with similar ideals to advance common goals.

C. To lease, own, purchase, hold and maintain real and other property of any and all kinds in the state of Alaska to facilitate the accomplishments of these ends.

2. MEMBERSHIP
A. Types of Membership
1. Regular Membership: A member 18 years of age or older. Any regular member shall be entitled to vote and hold office. All regular members shall enjoy all club privileges on an equal basis.
a. Family membership – 2 or more members of the same household

2. Junior Membership: A member under the age of 18 years. Junior members shall not be entitled to hold office. Use of club facilities shall be under the direct supervision of a regular member.

3. Associate Membership: A member 18 years of age or older. Associate members are not entitled to vote, hold office, receive class discounts, and are not required to be on the cleaning schedule.

B. New Membership Qualifications
1. Within a six-month period, you must:
a. Enter and attend at least one class session.
b. Submit a completed Application for Membership with dues attached.

2. At the next club meeting the application will be voted upon and affirmative votes of the majority of the members present and voting at the meeting shall be required to elect the applicant. Applicants for membership who have been rejected by the club may not re-apply within six (6) months after such rejection.

C. Dues

1. Regular memberships: Individual - $30.00 per fiscal year or $15.00 after May 1. Family - $42.00 per fiscal year or $21.00 after May 1.

2. Junior membership: $15.00 per fiscal year or $7.50 after May 1.

3. Associate membership: $20.00 per fiscal year.

4. Fiscal year: October 1 through September 30. Dues must be paid in full by November 1 of each year to maintain membership status.

5. Membership lapses: To create longevity incentives; if a member allows their membership status to lapse for three months (into the new calendar year) they must go through the reapplication process.

D. Membership Privileges


1. Voting at general membership meetings
2. Holding office
3. Special order items at cost (plus shipping and handling)
a. when combined with a regular Pen D.O.G. order
4. May apply for facility use
5. Receive a 10% discount on Pen D.O.G. classes

E. Membership Responsibilities

1. Participate in the general membership meetings.

2. Attend annual meeting.

3. Each member may be asked to take part in the many responsibilities of daily operation. Examples include but are not limited to: Housekeeping chores, answering and/or returning telephone calls, teaching and assisting at classes, and purchasing necessary supplies, utilizing PenD.O.G.'s tax exempt number, are all areas that require member participation if necessary.

4. Members may be placed on a cleaning list to come in and clean the Club. At present, we have hired a cleaning company, but that could change. In the event that it does, each member will have the option of being partnered with another member. The Vice-President will post and email out the cleaning list to the membership if necessary.

5. In order to facilitate the distribution of responsibilities, the following people should be contacted for information

a. President - Delegation
b. Vice President - Chores
c. Secretary - Correspondence
d. Treasurer - Supplies, and checking the Pen D.O.G. mailbox
e. Director of Trials and Training - Telephone & Classes

6. Telephones

a. As the club does not maintain regular business hours, it is often difficult for the public to contact us. To help make it easier, an answering machine is provided so people may leave messages for return calls.

b. Our answering machine message should offer general information about the club. A sample recording follows. Specifics regarding class times, subject matter, prerequisites and such should be answered individually.

i. You have reached the Peninsula Dog Obedience Group. We are located just north of Poppy Lane on K-Beach Rd. We are an obedience oriented dog-training club offering classes in everything from good manners for the family dog to competitive obedience and agility. If you would like more information about the club or upcoming classes, please leave your full name and telephone numbers where you can be reached both during the day and evening. Ask about our free weekly video night. Someone will return your call within 48 hours. Or check out our web site at PenDOG.org. Thank you for calling the Peninsula Dog Obedience Group.

c. It is the Director of Trial and Trainings responsibility to ensure the telephone is monitored. Every effort should be made to return all calls within a 48-hour period.

7. Supplies

a. The treasurer will ensure that any necessary training supplies are received prior to the first night of class. Each instructor should provide the treasurer with a list of needed supplies no later than one month prior to new sessions.

b. Additionally, any local supply requirements (cleaning materials, office supplies, etc.) should be coordinated through the treasurer.

3. CLASS INFORMATION
Children 16 or under must be accompanied by a responsible adult unless otherwise approved in advance by an instructor or a member of the board of directors.

A. Continuous

1. Puppy Kindergarten is for puppies 8 weeks through 5 months old, depending on breed and size. This class encourages social development through contact with other dogs and people. Confidence building exercises are performed using obstacles such as tunnels, teeter totters and ramps. Walking on a loose leash and basic commands (sit, down, stay and come) are taught with motivational emphasis. Demonstrations of dog care techniques are also provided. The entire family is encouraged to attend.
a. Prerequisite: Proof of vaccinations for distemper and parvo invoiced from a veterinary clinic.

2. Beginning Obedience is for dogs 5 months and older. This is a basic class and no previous training experience is necessary. Handlers are taught how to train their dog to pay attention, heel, sit automatically at a stop, down on command, stay in a position, and come when called. All family members are encouraged to attend, including well-behaved children. Parents may NOT leave children under 16 unattended.
a. Prerequisite: Proof of vaccinations or titer test for rabies, distemper, and parvo invoiced from a veterinary clinic.

B. Additional classes offered may include, but are not limited to:

1. Intermediate Obedience is for dogs and handlers who have completed a beginning obedience class. This class provides structured activities that allow students to work at their individual levels. Continuing to build on the foundations taught in beginning class, intermediate obedience adds off leash work, retrieving and jumping.
a. Prerequisite: see Beginning Obedience AND instructor's approval.

2. Advanced Obedience is offered for individuals interested in showing in Open and Utility classes at obedience trials. Open exercises include both retrieve on the flat and over jumps, drop on recall, and stays with the handler out of sight. Utility exercises include scent discrimination articles, hand signals, and both directed retrieves and jumping.
a. Prerequisite: see Beginning Obedience AND instructor's approval.

3. Specialty Classes may include, but not be limited to, Agility, Obstacles, Jumping, Clicker, Canine Good Citizen, Total Recall, Tracking, Nose Work, Rally, and Intermediate and Advanced obedience. Family Dog is for dogs 5 months or older. Basic commands sit, down, stay and loose leash walking are taught with emphasis on coming when called and household manners.
If you have a special need or would like to explore specialized dog training, please check with the Director of Trials and Training.
a. Prerequisite: see Beginning Obedience AND instructor's approval.

C. Vaccinations

1. Proof of vaccinations or titer test for distemper, parvovirus and rabies (age permitting) are mandatory

2. All vaccinations or titer tests are to be given by a licensed veterinarian.

3. The only acceptable proof of vaccination or titer test is an invoice from a licensed veterinarian.

4. If your dog is showing any signs of an infectious disease or communicable parasite, please keep it out of the facility until its health is fully restored.



4. Instructor Policy

A. The Pen D.O.G. Board of Directors must approve all instructors. The board has the final decision of awarding instructor status.

1. An individual will qualify for instructor discounts if they teach a minimum of two 6
or 8 week class sessions per fiscal year
2. The use of flat collars and other positive reinforcement teaching methods will
be emphasized during group classes.

B. Instructors will be members in good standing
or obtain a special guest instructor status from the Board of Directors.

C. Discounts include:

1. Free facility use (approved application must be on file)
2. Receive a $100.00 refund for attending a seminar.
a. This refund is offered once every fiscal year.
b. The Club is offering this benefit to instructors as a “continuing education” benefit. It is hoped the knowledge gained will be incorporated in their current classes or spark ideas for new classes that can be offered
c. Eligible for free class sessions at PenDOG

D. Instructors may, at their discretion, give full or partial class refunds for extenuating circumstances.

E. Co-Instructors:
1. Will receive a free class session for every class session taught

F. Instructor’s Helpers:
1. Will receive a free class day for every class day they assisted.
2. Responsible for signing the sign-in sheet that is posted. Must include class name and date/time.

5. Facility Use

A. Definition

1. Facility Use is defined as personal use outside of Pen D.O.G. classes and scheduled activities.

2. All regular members may apply for facility use. Cost for facility use is $100.00 per fiscal year (October 1 through September 30) or $50.00 after April 1.

3. Exclusive of scheduled classes or club sponsored events, facility use is at the member's own risk.

B. Acquiring Facility Use

1. Submit an application for Facility Use in person to the Board of Directors at any regular meeting

2. At the next club meeting the application will be voted upon and affirmative votes of the majority of the members present and voting at the meeting shall be required to approve the applicant. Applicants for facility use who have been rejected by the club may not re-apply within six (6) months after such rejection.

3. To maintain facility use you must:

a. Maintain your membership in good standing.

b. Pay the yearly facility use fee by November 1.

c. Abide by facility use rules and all club policies.

d. If you have allowed your facility use to lapse, you must reapply to gain facility use again. Lapsed facility use by a member in good standing will be reinstated by a vote of the BOD at the next meeting, or the BOD can call a special meeting to address it.

4. Facility use privileges:

a. Use of the facility and equipment, with the exception of the A-frame, dog walk, and teeter, at your convenience outside of scheduled classes and events. Instructor's approval required for use of contact obstacles.

b. An additional 10% discount off Pen D.O.G. classes.

c. Access to the Pen D.O.G. library.

d. Free or reduced rates to many Pen D.O.G. activities.

5. Facility Use Rules

a. Facility use is available outside of scheduled class times, activities and cleaning.

b. Due to insurance restrictions, facility use is limited to Pen D.O.G. members.

c. Do not leave unattended children or animals in the facility.

d. Facility may be scheduled for up to 2 hours per week.

e. You may schedule your time no more than one week in advance.

f. Unscheduled Facility Use
i. You must place your name on the calendar upon arrival
ii. No limit to the number of times.
iii. Limit your time to two hours if others arrive while you are there

g. -No alcoholic beverages on PenDOG property. -No smoking within the PenDOG building or within 50 feet of the entrance.
h. When leaving the facility:
i. Return all equipment to its proper place.
ii. Clean up any mess.
iii. Empty trash if necessary.
iv. Turn thermostat to 60 degrees.
v. Turn off all lights.
vi. Make sure all doors are securely locked.

i. Failure to comply with the above rules may result in the revocation of facility use.

j. Keys to the facility remain the property of Pen D.O.G. and must be surrendered on demand of the Board of Directors.
k. Clean up after your dog
L. For your safety, please do not touch any equipment without prior approval
m. Please wear appropriate footwear for the activity.


6. General Policies

A. A copy of any written document prepared for the club will be kept in a master file. Computer files will be copied to an external storage device and labeled with the program and file name and maintained in the master file.

B. Length of class and fees are to be determined by the instructor and approved by the Board of Directors. Current fee schedule will be kept on file in the club.

C. Board Members:
1. Will be given a key to the facility to be able to conduct Club business. Facility Use dues will need to paid if the Board member uses the facility for personal training.
2. Will be able to take two 8-week classes pre fiscal year.

7. Insurance

A. The Sportsman Insurance Company covers the Peninsula Dog Obedience Group against bodily injury and property damage. Coverage extends only to group activities and includes members and students.

B. All club activities must be noted in the club minutes and or on the club calendar prior to the activity to ensure coverage.

8. Special Relationship Agreements
1- To be entered into at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
2- The BOD will draft a relationship agreement to be signed by those involved with outside organizations as needed per event that involves organizations outside of PenDOG.
3- Each agreement will be cooperatively tailored to suit the needs of each event.
4- If one or more of the members involved in the outside group are also PenDOG members, they are to be compensated for their involvement per outside Event Organization Standard.

CLASS RULES

 All dogs must be vaccinated against parvo, distemper and rabies (age permitting). An invoice from a licensed veterinarian must be provided before your dog may enter the building.

 Your participation in all activities is at your own risk.

 Dogs must be under control at all times. All dogs must be on leash unless your instructor says otherwise.

 Unacceptable behavior must be dealt with immediately. This includes growling, snarling, lunging, or annoying other dogs or people in any way. Please check your equipment before coming to class to make sure everything is in good condition and fits properly.

 Please wear appropriate shoes for training. Tennis shoe types are best.

 You are responsible for cleaning up after your dog - indoors and outdoors. If your dog urinates indoors, there are cleaning solutions and paper towels available. If your dog has a bowel movement anywhere, there are paper towels, plastic bags and a pooper scooper available. Dogs may relieve themselves only in the area along the chain link fence – NOT against the building.

 No alcoholic beverages or smoking in the building.

 Please do not arrive more than 10 minutes before your class.

 Please ask the instructor prior to bringing children to class.

 For your safety, please keep off all equipment without instructor's approval.

 Children under the age of 16 may be allowed to handle their dogs on their own with instructor's approval.

 Parents may not leave children unattended under the age of 16.
