What we're about

We will continue to walk, but will now be scheduling many other fun events!

Hope you can join us!

Event participants are required to be a member of this meetup group, and have made a "Yes" RSVP for each event you are attending. It is necessary for each member's profile to show a current and clear face photo, so that the event host knows who is expected. All organizers and hosts are not professional walk/hike leaders or guides and are volunteers. The function of the member or organizer is to organize the outing. Each person and the guest(s) attending a meetup is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending any event organized by this group, you are aware of the risks associated with the activities.

Please, as always, check with your doctor before starting any exercise program. Be aware of especially hot or cold days. You might want to alter your walk accordingly. Myself, Gale and the leadership team, is not responsible for any injuries that might happen before or after or during a walk. By joining this group, you agree to walk at your own risk. Please bring water on hot days and a sweater or jacket on cooler days. You take full responsibility for your walking pace and progress. There are some up and down parts to this walk as well as possible items in the road such as small rocks etc. It is your responsibility to walk slowly and carefully to avoid these possible obstacles. You might want to bring a flashlight to light dark parts of the walk as the days grow shorter. Remember: You walk fully at your own risk as soon as you join this meetup. Also on occasion, a pet owner might bring his or her pet to walk with us. All pets brought must be approved by the leadership team prior to your first event, and you, the member are only allowed to bring one, well trained and behaved and friendly pet. Please be aware of any allergies or fears you might have about a pet being near. Lastly, as we walk in the upper part of Porter Ranch, there have been sightings of some wild animals around these areas. So far, we have not encountered any, such as a coyote, but there is always a possibility. I am not trying to frighten anyone, only to bring awareness. Please read each event description of each walk/hike for specific details and added rules for each meetup. For example, we don't permit dogs to every walk. These are our rules and guidelines.

Thank you for your understanding... Now let's GET OUT THERE AND WALK!!! lol

A Nature Walk in Granada Hills

Needs a location

Branch out from your usual routine and immerse yourself in a variety of wildlife and foliage. O’Melveny Park and Bee Canyon Park, noted for towering trees, scenic trails and lovely picnic and play areas, offer a fairly flat 2-mile walking tour. Both parks are located in Granada Hills (northeast). The area surrounds the Bee Canyon watershed and abuts the Santa Susana mountain range. 🌿 πŸ’• ☁️ 🌟 See you on the trail! ROUTE: From our parking and meeting area, we'll cross Sesnon Blvd. and enter O'Melveny Park. We'll walk the "Nature Trail" or another path for 1/2 mile. We'll U-turn and walk south for 1/2 mile, stopping at a public park restroom if necessary, on our way past our original meeting area across Sesnon Blvd.. Next, we'll walk through Bee Canyon (paralleling the creek bed) on flat terrain, for 30 minutes, U-turning before we reach Balboa Blvd. We'll then walk west back to our original meeting area. Total time: 60-75 minutes. The outing should be sprinkled with the usual mirth, merriment and goodwill for which this group is known. Duration: 45 minutes Pace: Approximately 1 mile in 21-22 minutes. You may check your pace using GPS or a treadmill. Distance: 2 miles Terrain: Hard packed dirt trail, fire road, grassy trail, pavement Restroom: Yes Known dangers: Rattlesnakes like to curl up near the railing on the side of the path that leads into O'Melveny park. A tarantula and a bobcat have also been seen by our group organizers. A Brown Bear was seen on 4/30/17. Dogs are able to use this trail, but must be kept on leash due to the wildlife threat. Parking: STREET PARKING on Meadowlark Ave., Barto Dr. or Van Gogh St. is recommended (to reduce the possibility of auto theft, which is known to occur in public parking lots, including the lot at O'Melveny Park). As with every event, it is suggested that you not leave valuables in your car in plain sight ... leave them at home. Either you or a thief can remove your items from your car, so let it be you. "HIDE IT-LOCK IT-KEEP IT" If you RSVP that you will attend, then for any reason decide not to attend, please update your RSVP at least 30 minutes before the start time. It is discourteous to allow the group to wait for you in vain at the start. Good things to bring on this walk: Drinking water (1 Liter), umbrella (you never know) sungear (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses), shoes with good tread; positive attitude, readiness to enjoy! Shade factor: Varies; plan to protect yourself from the sun in the absence of clouds! Dogs: OK (if friendly with people/other dogs, socialized, leashed, and screened prior to joining a walk). See "About us" section for dog screening information. You must follow group, local and state laws. **Dogs are able to use this trail, but must be kept on leash due to the wildlife threat.** IMPORTANT: Attendees are bound by the information in the "About Us" section specific to this group, as well as Meetup Terms of Service Agreement (http://www.meetup.com/terms/), especially Section 6.2. You are asked to review these items, and each individual event description in it's entirety, prior to attending any event. Every Monday and Thursday evening, we walk for 1 hour. See our calendar for details and to RSVP. This is a fantastic group to enjoy for healthy fun and making friends. Fun and friends make it easier to do your 10,000 daily steps for your health. We want you to enjoy the benefits of this group. Our ALL-VOLUNTEER TEAM of Organizers, plus Event Hosts, do our best to make your experience pleasant, safe and rewarding. If you have questions, ask us. We enjoy having you in this group and thank you for your continued support. Health and happiness, Your Organizers Wow, you actually read this? You are awesome. Movie night and potluck fun!

Nancy's Home

Let's see a movie chosen by our good friend Dan! We will see Eddie and the Cruisers! Please join us at the home of Nancy at 6 p.m. with your potluck to share for dinner. In November everybody did a good job with avoiding desserts and trying to bring main dishes and side dishes, such as green salads and fruit salads Etc. Let's start out the new year of 2019 in a healthy way! Please mention your potluck item in the comments section so we do not have duplicates. After dinner, we will watch the movie. Looking forward to seeing everyone! As usual, you must have met Nancy or one of the other leaders to attend this event. See you, at the movies!

Monday Afternoon Walk! Hues & Views (1 Hour)

Needs a location

Since this is a holiday, we will have an afternoon walk at 1 p.m.! Hoping for lovely weather! Our weekly walk in Gale's neighborhood, enjoying the expansive vistas and big skies from Braemore Rd. overlooking SFV. Some individuals have been attending weekly for months. In Late Spring and Summer, as the days lengthen and Daylight Savings Time is on, we enjoy glorious Sunsets (HUES). In Late Fall and Winter, we enjoy City Lights VIEWS. Plan ahead: This event convenes at a private residence, thus, attendees must introduce themselves to Gale (the host) prior to this event date (such as at the weekly Thursday evening walk - see calendar), in order to obtain the address. INFO (http://www.meetup.com/The-Porter-Ranch-Walking-and-Fun-Club/messages/boards/thread/50260919/) Gale will lead a leisurely 45-minute to 1-hour stroll within the boundary of Reseda Bl. /Tampa Ave. and Sesnon Bl. /Wilbur Ave. The selected route for Gale's Walk is mostly level with slight, if any, inclines. This is a good opportunity for casual walkers (generally, 1 mile >22 minutes -- you may use a treadmill to determine your pace). For those who are working on their cardio, a different host, or a substitute fast walker, will lead a brisk walk (same starting location and time, but a slightly different route) that includes some inclines and a faster pace. The pace is 1 mile in 16 - 20 minutes. THANKS to the hosts! Dogs: Ok, (if friendly with people/other dogs, socialized, and leashed). Please follow group, local and state laws. See "About us" section for dog screening information. Essentially, for the safety and well-being of everybody, the Organizer would like to screen pooches, in advance of their joining an event, for a variety of criteria, including temperament, size, sociability, age and activity level. Please contact Gale (http://www.meetup.com/The-Porter-Ranch-Walking-and-Fun-Club/members/520099/) with any questions regarding Dog Screening. NOTE: If you RSVP that you will attend, then for any reason decide not to attend, please update your RSVP before the start time. IMPORTANT: Attendees are bound by the information in the "About Us" section specific to this group, as well as Meetup Terms of Service Agreement (http://www.meetup.com/terms/), especially Section 6.2. You are asked to review these items, and each individual event description in it's entirety, prior to attending any event. This is a fantastic group to enjoy for healthy fun and making friends. Fun and friends make it easier to do your 10,000 daily steps for your health. We want you to enjoy the benefits of this group. Our ALL-VOLUNTEER team of five leaders, plus event hosts, do our best to make your experience pleasant, safe and rewarding. If you have questions or concerns, bring them to us. Thank you for being a member of this group. Health and happiness, Your Organizers
