• Wednesday CANYON TRAIL OAK-SHADED LOOP
Aliso Canyon Park, off of Rinaldi and Zelzah, offers a tranquil, partially-wooded scenic loop hike that is mostly flat, with a couple of small hills and creek crossings to get the heart rate up slightly. During warm months, we'll alternate the East Route and West Route as follows: Summer Loop East Route: Starting from the parking lot at Aliso Canyon, we'll walk north to the Diane Kartiala Trail Head, behind the equestrian center. We'll walk though a mallow forest and an Oak-shaded grove. We'll make a couple of dry creek crossings in order to fully enjoy the shaded area AKA "The Shire." We'll hike through the canyon and proceed back to the parking lot. Summer Loop West Route: We have done this route dozens of times, but for summer it has a twist. Starting from the parking lot at Aliso Canyon, we'll walk north on the west side of the equestrian center and across the footbridge to the trailhead. We'll walk a fire road until we reach an Oak-shaded grove (AKA "The Shire"). We'll proceed north/northeast, making a couple of dry creek crossings, in order to fully enjoy the shade, passing through the canyon's beautiful mallow forest, eventually returning to the parking area. Duration: 60 minutes Walk Distance: 2.5 mi .. approx 4500 steps Pace: Ideal for seasoned walkers Terrain: Sand/Dirt trail Restroom: Yes! At beginning and end Good things to bring on this walk: Drinking water (1 Liter), umbrella (you never know), sungear (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses), hiking poles (many find them helpful at creek crossings), positive attitude, big smile. Make sure that your shoes/boots have a tread. High-visibility clothing is a safety plus! Shade factor varies; plan to protect yourself from the sun's heat and rays. Parking: Look for the sign "Aliso Canyon Park" on the north side of Rinaldi. Note the park entrance road leading downhill. Drive on in and park in designated spaces. Street parking is also available on Rinaldi. As with every event, it is suggested that you not leave valuables in your car ... leave them at home. • A Nature Walk in Granada Hills
Branch out from your usual routine and immerse yourself in a variety of wildlife and foliage. O’Melveny Park and Bee Canyon Park, noted for towering trees, scenic trails and lovely picnic and play areas, offer a fairly flat 2-mile walking tour. Both parks are located in Granada Hills (northeast). The area surrounds the Bee Canyon watershed and abuts the Santa Susana mountain range. 🌿 💕 ☁️ 🌟 See you on the trail! ROUTE: From our parking and meeting area, we'll cross Sesnon Blvd. and enter O'Melveny Park. We'll walk the "Nature Trail" or another path for 1/2 mile. We'll U-turn and walk south for 1/2 mile, stopping at a public park restroom if necessary, on our way past our original meeting area across Sesnon Blvd.. Next, we'll walk through Bee Canyon (paralleling the creek bed) on flat terrain, for 30 minutes, U-turning before we reach Balboa Blvd. We'll then walk west back to our original meeting area. Total time: 60-75 minutes. The outing should be sprinkled with the usual mirth, merriment and goodwill for which this group is known. Duration: 45 minutes Pace: Approximately 1 mile in 21-22 minutes. You may check your pace using GPS or a treadmill. Distance: 2 miles Terrain: Hard packed dirt trail, fire road, grassy trail, pavement Restroom: Yes Known dangers: Rattlesnakes like to curl up near the railing on the side of the path that leads into O'Melveny park. A tarantula and a bobcat have also been seen by our group organizers. A Brown Bear was seen on 4/30/17. Dogs are able to use this trail, but must be kept on leash due to the wildlife threat. Parking: STREET PARKING on Meadowlark Ave., Barto Dr. or Van Gogh St. is recommended (to reduce the possibility of auto theft, which is known to occur in public parking lots, including the lot at O'Melveny Park). As with every event, it is suggested that you not leave valuables in your car in plain sight ... leave them at home. Either you or a thief can remove your items from your car, so let it be you. "HIDE IT-LOCK IT-KEEP IT" If you RSVP that you will attend, then for any reason decide not to attend, please update your RSVP at least 30 minutes before the start time. It is discourteous to allow the group to wait for you in vain at the start. Good things to bring on this walk: Drinking water (1 Liter), umbrella (you never know) sungear (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses), shoes with good tread; positive attitude, readiness to enjoy! Shade factor: Varies; plan to protect yourself from the sun in the absence of clouds! Dogs: OK (if friendly with people/other dogs, socialized, leashed, and screened prior to joining a walk). See "About us" section for dog screening information. You must follow group, local and state laws. **Dogs are able to use this trail, but must be kept on leash due to the wildlife threat.** IMPORTANT: Attendees are bound by the information in the "About Us" section specific to this group, as well as Meetup Terms of Service Agreement (http://www.meetup.com/terms/), especially Section 6.2. • Monday Evening Hues & Views (1 Hour)
Our weekly walk in Gale's neighborhood, enjoying the expansive vistas and big skies from Braemore Rd. overlooking SFV. Some individuals have been attending weekly for months. In Late Spring and Summer, as the days lengthen and Daylight Savings Time is on, we enjoy glorious Sunsets (HUES). In Late Fall and Winter, we enjoy City Lights VIEWS. Plan ahead: This event convenes at a private residence, thus, attendees must introduce themselves to Gale (the host) prior to this event date (such as at the weekly Thursday evening walk - see calendar), in order to obtain the address. INFO (http://www.meetup.com/The-Porter-Ranch-Walking-and-Fun-Club/messages/boards/thread/50260919/) Gale will lead a leisurely 45-minute to 1-hour stroll within the boundary of Reseda Bl. /Tampa Ave. and Sesnon Bl. /Wilbur Ave. The selected route for Gale's Walk is mostly level with slight, if any, inclines. This is a good opportunity for casual walkers (generally, 1 mile >22 minutes -- you may use a treadmill to determine your pace). For those who are working on their cardio, a different host, or a substitute fast walker, will lead a brisk walk (same starting location and time, but a slightly different route) that includes some inclines and a faster pace. The pace is 1 mile in 16 - 20 minutes. THANKS to the hosts! Dogs: Ok, (if friendly with people/other dogs, socialized, and leashed). Please follow group, local and state laws. See "About us" section for dog screening information. Essentially, for the safety and well-being of everybody, the Organizer would like to screen pooches, in advance of their joining an event, for a variety of criteria, including temperament, size, sociability, age and activity level. Please contact Gale (http://www.meetup.com/The-Porter-Ranch-Walking-and-Fun-Club/members/520099/) with any questions regarding Dog Screening. Did you know? Every Thursday at 7 p.m., we walk for an hour in a different location. See our calendar for details and to RSVP. NOTE: If you RSVP that you will attend, then for any reason decide not to attend, please update your RSVP before the start time.
