Saturday, July 13th – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Come ready to observe and identify butterflies and wildflowers of prairies and savannas. We will be hiking through the Schurch-Thomson Prairie unit of The Prairie Enthusiasts’ Mounds View Grassland preserve, a 570-acre area that contains remnant and restored prairies and grasslands, savannas and woodlands, spring seep wetlands, and cold water streams. We will also visit the adjacent private Underwood Prairie. Dozens of mid-summer prairie flowers will be in bloom, and we hope to see the rare and endangered Regal Fritillary and many other butterflies.
What to Bring/Wear: Wear good walking shoes and be prepared for a long hike (much off trail). Bring binoculars for butterfly viewing (the closer they can focus the better). Dress for the weather and bring water and sun protection.
